In the beginning, perhaps because of the KA gushing, this book seriously annoyed the crap out of me. Seriously. Like, I was annoyed about being annoyed. But - I've given it a 5 star review! What is going on here? You may be asking this question. I certainly was.
The thing is - even while it was annoying me, it was SO FLIPPIN HILARIOUS (the good kind) that I laughed out loud. A LOT. I found myself unable to contain a smile as I read at lunch today. I was fighting that smile, let me tell you, but it would not be stopped! And then, suddenly, somewhere, I stopped being annoyed and realized that I was actually ENJOYING this story.
Part of what annoyed me was that our love interests are not in a lot of the story together. They talk & text & interact, but they're not physically in the same space for 80% of the story. And then the reason why is explained, and I get it. And while that fact may still annoy me to the point I'm not sure this will be a re-read, I'm glad I read it, I'm glad I didn't give up on it, and I'm definitely keeping the book.
So. : ) In the end, I can recommend the story. I can say that, for me, the reason why things had to happen the way they did was worth the annoyance I experienced. The smiles outweigh the frowns. WAY more smiles and laughs and good feels than bad.
When they first meet Dan in Gulf Port, Dan sets Allison up with his uncle. Casey and Dan leave for three hours while Allison stays behind on the porch with the uncle. They talk. It is unclear what Allison knows from that conversation, about Dan. She keeps it to herself, though (through the whole book).
I loved the great dialog the author writes. What fun characters and what a great adventure. Look forward to more books by this author!
Even with the bad language and crude conversations this tale could have been as good as The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants with a zest of lust and angst at the end. Unfortunately, the mom and daughter duo as a whole failed me. It was the chunks of monotonous "in your own head" conversations that say nothing but take up space on the page. It’s what drives my readers mind crazy!
“Throwing my head forward, bending in half at the waist, and sending my hair up and over my head, I used both of my hands to bunch it together, making sure to get all of the hair that had a tendency to stick to the back of my neck. Straightening back to full height, I held the bunch of hair with my right hand, pulled the hair tie off of that wrist with my left hand, and secured my hair at the crown of my head.” …. Sorry, but that's just ridiculous detail.
There were 4 pages of Haley and Allison going through a McDonald's, it was just over exaggerated nonsense that wasn't even trying to be funny.
I understand this author must be a fan of Kristen Ashley (KA). I very much understand that as KA was my first author crush. I only gave up on KA since she became a published author, and started adding ridiculous amounts of unnecessary nonsensical detail in her latter published books.
I’m just sorry Ms. Curtis didn’t take up the writing style of KA’s books from her self-published days.….
This could have been a great story, and a great read.
