Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

One of the most successful Classical Greek introductory textbooks, this edition provides an introduction to Classical Greek with an encouraging, pleasant, and accessible presentation for today's modern students. Fifty short lessons presume no knowledge of Latin, and allow students to master a concept before moving on to the next. Each lesson is accompanied by numerous exercises, as well as manageable selections of Ancient Greek writings (edited in early chapters) from Aesop's most amusing and curious fables to concise Greek passages from The New Testament, Aristotle, Arrian, Demosthenes, Lysias, Plato, Thucydides, and Xenophon.

The fourth edition of From Alpha to Omega retains all the features that have made it a best-selling introductory Greek textbook, many of them improved or expanded:

  • Balanced, evenly-paced lessons to accommodate various academic schedules
  • Brief readings from Ancient Greek authors
  • Efficient translation exercises
  • Succinct, instructive vocabulary lists
  • Glossary containing all vocabulary words from lessons and readings, both Greek-to-English, and English-to-Greek

Online exercises, audio recordings, video tutorials, and more accompany each chapter at courses.pullins.com.

An Ancillary Exercise Workbook and a Greek Reader are also available.

I am using this book (with the answer key and the supplementary exercises) for self-teaching, and it is truly awesome. Am paralleling it with NT and LXX Greek. This Groton book is getting me interested in Aesop; there are simplified versions of the fables in here, and I'm compiling a notebook of the fuller versions of the same fables for self-study. ... The publisher steered me away from trying to use an earlier edition of this book, saying that earlier editions have too many typos.

"From Alpha to Omega" (FATO) is an excellent introductory text for Classical Greek. It provides an enormous amount of information, not all of which need necessarily be taught, but all of which is extremely useful. The chapters are carefully crafted to focus on one primary grammar issue and contain only ten or so words each, making them extremely user-friendly to 45-minute class periods. Long vocabulary lists are often the bane of Greek texts. FATO has carefully selected the most useful words designed to facilitate reading actual Greek (Aesop, Xenophon, Plato, etc.). The vocabulary in each lesson is also carefully annotated, containing much essential information (e.g., we learn that the Greek word "leípo" means "leave" in the sense of "leave behind"), including basic roots of verbs. The appendices contain not only full summaries of paradigms, but also lists of the words covered in each chapter. There is also a very well done workbook to accompany the text with much extra material for practice. I would also highly recommend the accompanying book "41 Classical Greek Stories" which correspond to FATO Chapter 5 and beyond. Finally, there are also readings from the Greek Bible to give students a wide range of exposure to the language. A website is also available for extra practice.

This book is designed for college use, but it am using it with Juniors and Seniors in high school. It is quite acceptable, especially since all my Greek students have had at least three years of Latin. Even without a knowledge of any Latin, FATO would be my choice for a high school Greek text if the students are motivated and of at least average ability. It should be noted, for a potential instructor's comfort, that FATO presumes no knowledge of Latin. An altogether wonderful Greek textbook!

I bought this book as a textbook for my Beginning Ancient Greek class. I love the format and organization of it and have found it super useful and very comprehensive. I've been doing pretty well too since the book also has extra exercises online that are super helpful (for $19.95 though).

No, no, no. The information is fine but the exercises are too few and too obtuse. It is not helpful to see how clever Anne Groton thinks she is or how well she can hide information. If language is the mathematics of the humanities then teach it that way. Go from easy sentences to harder ones. Make it progressive. Don't play stump the chumps, it's a waste. If you want to know what I mean, look at Wheelock's Latin. There are tons of sentences in each chapter that go from super simple to ever more difficult. In this book they are all just difficult and apparently purposefully confusing. Unfair to the student who actually wants to learn. Use a different text, please.
