A large part of the Alpha Underground story is the main character’s development, both getting in touch with her own inner wolf and learning how to lead a pack, and you don’t get that kind of growth without making some mistakes. Urban fantasy offers plenty of powerful heroines these days, but I actually prefer books that allow the main characters to grow more. This series did a great job allowing both the main character and secondary characters to learn and grow.
The story picks up pretty quickly, and the pace stays fairly relentless throughout all three novels. The flash fiction at the end is cute and provides a little more insight into characters that didn't get much attention in the trilogy.
The writing was sensual and humorous and the editing was good. Readers should be aware that there is some violence and a few sexually explicit scenes. Personally, I wasn’t uncomfortable with any of the content.
For me, this was the epitome of a pleasure read. Quick read, no significant editing problems, not too complex, but it kept my interest and left me wanting more without feeling like I'd been cheated of a real ending. I’d recommend this to anyone who enjoys character-driven urban fantasy/paranormal romance.
Note that I read the individual books, not this bundled version, so I cannot comment specifically on the formatting of this bundle, although I can say that all of the author's books I have previously read have been well formatted.
Half Wolf: This story picks up when Fen is a few years older than she was in the The Complete Bloodling Serial. Fen has been tossed out of her pack and is now the Alpha leader of four other wolves. She is also being stalked by an uber-strong Alpha wolf. Fen is a half wolf and the story shows how she grows and a Alpha and woman. She must work on her strengths to overcome the obstacles along the way. This was well written and full of humorous situations.
Lone Wolf Dawn is the second book in the Alpha Underground Series and a spinoff of the Wolf Rampant Series by Aimee Easterling. The story continues with Fen the half wolf shifter and her mate Hunter an uber-alpha wolf gone rogue. They face many obstacles and dangers together and apart. Fen's backstory comes to light bringing more depth to her character. She also is faced with an important choice to make concerning her mother who she hasn't seen since she was nine years old.
Dark Wolf Adrift: An Alpha Underground novella is giving the reader a look back in time to learn about Hunter Green and how he came to be. Born a Bloodling, Hunter was abandoned by his wolf mother when he learned to shift human. His values came from training to be a Navy Seal. Hunter had a protecting nature but felt he didn't quite fit in. The uber alpha of his wolf had gotten him noticed...Not just by anyone, it was Lucas Stormwinder of the Tribunal.
I truly enjoyed these stories by Aimee Easterling. I have read almost all of her paranormal books and find them to be engaging.
This was not the best shifter story I have read, but it is not the worst either. It was at least different from the normal wolf tale. I did enjoy the description of the show at the bar with the strip tease, although I am not sure what possessed Ginger to do this in such an obviously dangerous place.
Fen may not be but half-wolf, but she knew what her duties as an alpha were. It would have been hard for her to suddenly have responsibility for other lives in a place where her heritage was such a handicap. I feel there could have been a little more background on her to make her easier to understand. I had to keep reminding myself that she was trying to do an Alpha's job with very few qualifications for the job. If she had trusted her wolf more she might have been better off, but apparently she had experience that this was not something she felt she could do.
I did not like the constant repetition of "uber-alpha" and "troublesome twin" as another reviewer pointed out. I think is would be best to use the names instead of these constant descriptives. (And what the heck is an uber-alpha anyway? Does he drive for Uber? Just kidding.) That said, I would l like to read the next story and see how Fen and Hunter play out.
Lone Wolf Dawn
I loved this book. I liked the first one, but this one was fantastic. I loved Celia and how she did her best to let Fen know she was sorry for how she acted towards her as a child. I also loved that Fen has started to trust not only her wolf, but Hunter.
This book was a great sequel and you will love it. Her old pack members show up and a few more wolves will join her family. there will be some hairy moments and Fen will find a home for her pack. I can't wait for the next one. I can't believe there will only be one more. There seems to be so many potential stories to tell of Ginger and her girlfriend and maybe Cinnamon can find a girl? How about Lia? Will she grow with her wolf and find a mate? How will Hunter be as a father? So many stories to tell.
I really loved this book. It has a little bit of everything. There is love, conflict, mystery, and some alpha showdowns.
The book begins with Fen working with the one-body Robert on another in a string of murders that appear to be committed by a shifter, but Fen can find no sniff of a shifter. On the home front there is the upcoming All-pack where Fen hopes to have her pack recognized by the other packs and her territory upheld.
When a ram is killed on the night of the pack run, things get hairy with the locals that blame one of the "dogs" for the kill. On top of that, the council enforcer that used to employ Hunter is sniffing around and has brought Hunter's replacement along for the ride.
Join Fen and company as they battle to save themselves and their new home. Will they finally get to have the kind of pack they want?
I sure hope we get more books on other pack members!
I received free copies of these books and voluntarily reviewed them, as I do all the books I read.
