I like that Fargo acknowledges from the beginning that he's always wanted to be rich. It made me say to myself "Well, whatever I may think of his book, at least he's honest." What sets Fargo apart from other "How to Succeed in Business" coaches is that he clearly differentiates fancy toys (say a Ferrari) as a motivator or symbol that spurs one towards a goal and the goal itself. The distinction is subtle, but it makes the difference between a life filled with money and cool stuff and one built on accomplishment that (as a by-product) allows one to enjoy money and stuff.
I like the way Fargo balances up-to-the-minute technology (e.g. computer programs that track the handling of customer complaints) and old-fashioned good customer service (sending a client a real birthday card rather than an email or e-card). He's a man who knows that tracking and quantifying the value of a given account is important, but so is maintaining meaningful contact with the individuals behind the account.
In the end, I think that's what sets ALPHABET SUCCESS apart from so many books in its category--it never forgets that a business is at its foundation a human interacting with other humans. So, there's room for mistakes as well as growth. Mistakes MAKE for growth.
And if this isn't enough to get you to give this book a try, all of the proceeds of the book generated in 2014 will go to support children in Africa via Save The Children. How's that for putting a human face on success?
I often felt like I was having an intimate conversation or dialogue rather than reading a story. I think that's part of Tim's unique style and helps relate the principles and tips. The book focuses on building on the basics of success and relying on a solid foundation of common sense, goals and inspiration, humanism, and lack of fluff.
The combination of GHI (Getting Highly Inspired) and PQR (Pursue Quantative Results) were two success principles that really stuck out (Note: They all do.)! Bottom line, inspire yourself and dream big, but make sure you can measure the road to success and the results on the journey and destination.
After each ABC success acronym, there are pertinent examples and a 'Do try this at home' section. This is an enjoyable read where seasoned business executives to start-ups can use this practical and actionable advice for business as well as life. A thoroughly enjoyable read.
I love the way Tim uses the Alphabet to separate the chapters, whilst communicating vital and deep messages - he uses simple analogies like: DEF Don't Ever Forget (to say thank you), GHI Getting Highly Inspired and my personal favourite YZ Yellow Zebra.
Tim cares deeply for people, has energy and real passion for life and this shows in his book, don't just read Alphabet Success - it's short enough to stop and ponder on what Tim has shared with you - in fact he has even a 'Do Try This At Home' at the end of each of the chapters where he challenges you to think about new things.
I admire ChangeMakers like Tim they are the RuleBreakers and this book does a good deal of that.
You will enjoy this book even if it is just your wish to be a RuleBreaker.
Rich Simmonds, Author 5 Night Plan - The Guide to Strong and Grounded Relationships.
Tim gives 9-simple success lessons each starting with the next sequence in the alphabet. For example, the first chapter is ABC: Always Be Committed. In that chapter he discusses the importance of being committed to yourself, your vision, to action and to others.
Throughout the book, Tim interweaves real life stories of how he built and sold his business, Omega Insurance Services. Real life anecdotes have become a bit cliche in the success and self-help genre. And, I'm normally not a big fan of what has become a way to fill pages in a book. But, Tim's stories are engaging and exciting, largely because of the nature of his business -- insurance fraud investigations.
The book is written as a lesson in business, but many if not all of the lessons are applicable in any area of life.
Throughout the book there is an overlying theme: To be successful in business (and in anything really) you need to be clear about what it is you want, and you need to be constantly looking to add value to others.
Alphabet Success is a short, simple read and I think you'll find it enjoyable and valuable.
