This 8 inch design is not your typical low profile acoustic addition. With 350W RMS and 1000W MAX power, this is an upgrade you and your ride have been waiting for! The DCP Series Custom Ported Enclosure delivers high power output and extension thought to be only possible with larger enclosures. The key is the precise tuning of the Alphasonik Subwoofer driver to the highly efficient slot port design. Built on a stamped steel basket that provides a sturdy platform in which the motor structure can maintain a solid position, properly vented in addition to the bumped and vented back plate to keep the motor structure cool, and a pressed paper cone with an inverted poly dust cap that are designed to be lightweight yet rigid enough to maintain its shape during higher excursion. The computer optimized bass reflex slot port wraps around two walls of the enclosure to produce the necessary low frequencies thus ensures excellent extension and frequency response. The flared port ends are designed to maximize performance and the internally cornered bracing reduces standing waves and reduces port noise. The DCP enclosure ships loaded, wired and ready to connect via the Spring-loaded nickel-plated terminals. The enclosure is built with durable 5/8” MDF construction and has a high grade black carpet with the original Alpha logo embroidered on it. Standing at just 5 inches width with a height of 11.5 and length of 19 inches, this heavyweight is definitely the underdog to bet your money on.

After owning the previous generation of Type R, I knew this one wouldn't disappoint. From the moment it first played I knew I'd made the right decision. This thing pounds, so much so that I'm worried it might shake my car apart. I'm only running it on 600 watts rms, and it can handle 1000. Can't imagine what it would be like at full power. Best sub I've found in the price range.

I already had one of these subs in my Blazer and liked it so much I added two more. In my opinion these subs are on level with others that cost twice as much. I ran an old MTX 81000d to one in a vented box built to specs. Spec sheet on the amp list it at 1,297 watts at 12.5 volts. I'm going back with three in a sealed and divided enclosure and believe I can safely feed everything my amp has to them and never fear of damage. They are quality, they have a clean look, and if you decide to add more later they are produced in such volume that even if the style changes you can still find your model easily unused as old stock.

Better than the JL W3?

I've had a lot of subwoofers in my life.. Mostly cheaper junk (bunch of Kicker CVR, Comps, cheaper Pioneer, Sony Xplod) but I've also had some quality setups. Out of all the subwoofers I've owned, there has only been one other that can compete with the Type R: the JL W3. I had the JL for around 8 months before someone stole it and I've had this Type R for the same amount of time by now so I got to know each sub pretty well. I'll compare the two, since tons of people cross shop these two subwoofers.

-In pure SQ, I will say that the JL wins. It's really an objective win. The JL has such a beautiful, musical sound to it. The JL just blended into my system so well. Its frequency response is so smooth -- every frequency from 20-200 HZ was nicely balanced. The Type R has a weird sort of frequency hump that I've ascertained to be a an aspect of the sub.. It plays higher bass frequencies pretty well but just sounds okay around 100-150 HZ. Less than 100 HZ is the Type R's bread and butter.

-In SPL it's laughable how much louder the Type R is than the W3. I couldn't believe my ears. This is the first subwoofer I've ever had where at no point ever have I wished I had a second subwoofer. It's that loud. So much so that I took it out of the ported enclosure I had it in and put it in a small sealed enclosure, and it's still loud enough for me.

-The Type R also has a special quality that the JL didn't: it's able to produce this type of bass that just seems envelope and dig into you. It's hard to explain but you bassheads will understand. Its xmax is a lot higher than the JL which is probably the reason why. Put the Type R in a ported enclosure tuned to ~33 HZ and you will be amazed.

-The W3 is fine with being underpowered. You really need AT LEAST 500W RMS for the Type R but really it should be at least 600.

In conclusion, both are damn good subs, and they each got 5 stars from me, but for different reasons. They are completely different subwoofers. The JL is beautifully musical and perfect for songs with punchy, accurate bass. The Alpine is a bass monster with decent SQ that would probably be louder than two W3s put together. You'll love whichever one you choose. I promise.

Also - if this sub doesn't sound good once you first get it, don't worry. A subwoofer that has this much travel really needs to break in. Mine sounded considerably better the longer I played it.
