Editorial Reviews

A is for Alpine, six friends from Melbourne who make bold, twinkling, sophisticated pop music. Their debut almost-self-titled record is a collection of vibrant songs that shimmer and shine with colourful harmonies and inventive melodies. Alpine traverse diverse themes, ideas and sounds on the album, always assured, but never quite taking themselves too seriously. 1. Lovers 1 2. Lovers 2 3. Hands 4. Villages 5. Softsides 6. One reason to pay attention to selections at NPR Music is that occasionally they allow you to stumble across something unique, engaging, and downright fun. 'A Is For Alpine' is just such a thing.

It is an admixture of ethereal harmonies, electronic ripples, and driving beats, layered in proportions that seem to touch the mind on many levels. At moments you are being tugged at by the insistent bass and drum lines, sure you're about to hear just another rock standard, and then Phoebe Baker's and Lou James' vocals seem to fall down and wrap around you, as synthesized counterpoints join in. It is the musical version of driving through a torrential rain to break out into shafts of pure, joyous light.

The album seems to float effortlessly between themes of love and movement and change, always having underlying nods to the senses, as if trying to connect with your very nerve endings. You can't help immersing yourself in the tunes at every level. The energy behind each song is palpable.

Alpine is definitely a band to watch, if this album is any indication.

A fun, dramatic, and driving pop album that encompasses a wide range of brilliant tracks. I have devoted myself to this album for a couple of months, and have been at awe at its legitimacy and energy. It is one of those little masterpieces that remind me of the first time I heard Moon Safari or Oracular Spectacular for the first time - sound waves that linger and tickle, and a deep meaningfulness that resonates with all audiences. Perfect for a drive, perfect for a dinner party, perfect for turning up and dancing, A is for Alpine is a brilliant little album, perfect for the twenty-first century.

Bought it for "Gasoline" but all of the songs are awesome, no disappointment at all. Can't wait for their second CD.

My first experience with this band was seeing them live, they opened for Empire of the Sun.

They were a good choice for an opening act! I was really digging them live.

Got this album after the show and it does not disappoint.
