Editorial Reviews

Slim Thug's major-label debut solo album released by Geffen Records through Star Trak, the label founded and funded by mega-star producers The Neptunes. Other producers on Almost Platinum include Jazze Pha, who laces Slim with a slicked-out, back-porch soul jam, 'Incredible Feeln'. The album shows off the many different styles that Slim Thug feels makes him a universal MC, despite his Texas roots. 2005.

I'm not sure how to give an intro to a guy like Slim Thug. Considering I don't know much about him other then the fact that he was a Houston rapper and was featured on Mike Jones' "Still Tippin'". When I was searching around amazon.com I came across Slim Thug's "Already Platinum. I read some reviews about him and pretty much everyone was really excited about this guy and loved his album.

So the other day when I was picking up Young Jeezy's album I decided that I would stretch and go after Slim Thug. I knew I liked his voice from "Still Tippin'" and I figured if it sucked I could just sell it to someone used. I went with it and picked it up and to say the least, I was shocked. I hadn't noticed that Slim had so many songs produced by Pharrell and that he even had the Star Trak label, I thought he was Swisha House so that tells you how much I have paid attention to this guy. Let me just say Slim tore these tracks apart. He didn't have a ton of guys all over his album, it was mainly Slim, and that is a really good thing. On the tracks that did have collaborations he didn't let anyone show him up and steal the track. Take the popular "3 Kings" which features the true trap star T.I. and Bun B. Slim held his own and made sure he didn't let anyone show him up. From start to finish this is all Slim Thug and that is a very, very good thing.

1. The Intro- Slim starts off talking on a hot beat but then gets into a smooth, slowed down flow. His lyrics aren't killer but it's just the intro. He keeps it short and sweet. 4*

2. Like a Boss- First track produced by the Neptunes and Slim Thug rips it apart. The beat is pretty hot and the woman screaming can get on my nerves but it doesn't bother me to much. Slim starts off his riot of words strong and early. 5*

3.

Well....in case you don't know Slim Thug used to record with Swisha House, the record label of Mike jones, Paul Wall, and formerly, Chamillionaire. Unlike Mike Jones's debut though, Slim Thug comes with good beats AND lyrics.

1. I like the way the Intro starts off the album, its got a nice sample and tempo to it.

2."Like A Boss" was an alright song, but it's kinda annoying with that ho screamin over the whole song. Isn't it interesting how he can make north, top, cost, and house all rhyme with boss?

3. 3 Kings definitely has that bounce to it...plus Bun B's on it so you can't go wrong.

4. "Diamonds" is the slowest non-screwed rap song that I've ever heard, but that's not a bad thing by any means. The beat has that slow bounce to it, the lyrics are tight, and the hook(like a lot of hooks from the south) samples from an old UGK song. It's probly my favorite song on the cd.

5. Boyz N Blue - Once again has that repetitive (but catchy) hook to it kinda like still tippin or sittin sideways...a decent song, not a hit but worth listenin to.

6. I Ain't Heard Of That Remix - Neptunes beat is fire, slim thug's verse is nice, bun b, once again, wrecks shop.

7. Click Clack - Makes me nod my head most definitely, but for some reason I don't usually listen to the whole song...

8. Everybody Loves A Pimp - True Indeed, Jazze Pha actually sounds GOOD on this song, b/c he's pretty annoying at times. Slim Thug spits kinda simplistic, but it meshes nicely with the futuristic beat supplied so it's all good.

9. Already Platinum - Pharrell seems to be getting better at rapping, i can actually listen to him now without laughing, his verse is pretty nice on this. Slim Thug spits nicely on this, too.

Although many listeners may approach this album as yet another attempt from a succsseful underground or independant artist to strike it big in the independant ranks, solely for commercial success, this is definitley not the case with Slim Thugs, "Already Platinum". Perhaps the most noticable, or prominant trait slim thug showcases throughout this album is his ability to let his personality speak through his rhymes, and continuosly flow about more than just cars and bling (a common misconception about southern artists). Slim touches on a number of subjects, from the passing of friends("dedicate") to his everyday huslte and grind in Houston, Texas ("this is my life"). In addition to supreme production by the Neptunes and Jazze Pha, Slim manages to stay true to form, by smoothly flowing on screwed up or slowed down beats. In addition, he collabs with Bun B, 1/2 of the legendary rap duo UGK, as well as his original "BOYZ N BLUE" click. Throughout the album, Slim Thug manages to produce probable singles and club bangers such as, "like a boss", "playa you don't know", and "3 kings", while still allowing for more sentimental and soulful tracks such as, "dedicate", "Miss Mary", "Ashy to Classy", and "everybody loves a pimp" to shine. Meanwhile, tracks like "click clack", which features fellow star trek label member, Pusha T 1/2 of the CLipse, provide for a more aggressive Slim Thug which, with the help of the neptunes, greatly compliments his flow, almost as much as over slower beats. All in all, i would compare this album to a slightly lesser version of Lil' Waynes summer 04 classic, "the carter". Although the production on this album may be a bit more diverse than "the carter", Waynes flow and lyrical ability definitley surpasses Slim Thugs.Read more ›
