Much more than a stylish speaker system, the Altec Lansing Octiv 650 lets you play video from your iPhone 4 or iPod touch on your TV. A free, downloadable "Music Mood" app lets you control a seven-band equalizer using your iPhone or iPod, and the app also provides an ambient library of relaxing visuals and sounds. Multiple input/output jacks let you use the speaker for TV audio, and an integrated, 4-inch downward-firing subwoofer improves the bass content of both your movies and your music. Compact enough to fit on your kitchen counter, this speaker has an all-black finish and wedge-shaped architecture that helps disperse sound evenly throughout your room.
TV and Audio Input/Output Options
In addition to playing your music, the Octiv 650 enables you to play videos from your iPhone or iPod on your TV. The speaker features component and composite video outputs, making it easy to watch YouTube, Netflix or other video streaming services right on your TV (only compatible with 4th Gen iPod touch and iPhone 4). Additionally, an Aux In jack makes it possible to use the Octiv 650 as a dedicated speaker system for your TV.
Free "Music Mood" App Provides a Seven-Band Equalizer and Ambient Nature Sounds/Visuals
The Octiv 650 features onboard adjustable bass and treble controls that allow you to manually fine-tune the acoustics of the speaker. By using the seven-band equalizer in the free "Music Mood" app in tandem with the speaker's control, you can create your preferred sound profile. Turn up the bass when listening to hip-hop, or emphasize gentle mids while enjoying classical. Alternately, you can select from any one of the speaker's built-in EQ presets.
The "Music Mood" app also provides a library of ambient nature sounds and visuals, so you can kick back and zone out to relaxation videos like an ocean sunset, a running stream, or a crackling fireplace.
Nested Subwoofer Delivers Rich, Warm Bass
In spite of its compact size, the Octiv 650 delivers powerful audio performance. It has been engineered to render your music as it was meant to be heard, with crisp highs, mellow mids, and booming lows.
At four inches in diameter, the nested subwoofer is powerful enough to fill your room with heavy bass tones. It is located on the bottom of the speaker, completely hidden from view.
Sleek, Wedge-Shaped Design
With its black finish and minimal aesthetic, the Octiv 650 is designed to seamlessly blend in with your décor. Its wedge-shaped architecture creates a more effective structure for sound projection; this design disperses sound evenly throughout your room, eliminating dead spots. This allows the Octiv 650 to compete acoustically with speaker systems many times its size.
Universal iPhone/iPod Compatibility
The Octiv 650 is universally compatible with all iPhone and iPod models (excluding the iPod Shuffle). Compatible devices include the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, and iPhone, and every model of the iPod touch, iPod Classic, and iPod Nano.

I did a comparison with our Bose Companion 2 Series II multimedia speaker system, changing back and forth between them to see how each performed. In louder sections of music, the Bose did seem to retain more clarity, but the sound was highly directional. It's never an issue sitting at the computer, but compared to the Altec Lansing M650 Speaker System it did not fill the room with bass.

The design and features, not to mention the quality of the sound of the Altec M650 speaker system sets it apart from many others in this price range. First, the dock itself is allows iPhones to fit using with any size case. Also, rumors abound that the next iPhone may be slightly larger, 4" vs 3.5" screen. If that happens then many current docks will not be compatible with newer phones and you know what that means - imagine spending $600 for a Bose 10 that doesn't fit your new iPhone/iPod!!! And, Yes, it does charge your device. The remote, unlike many, is full featured including dedicated Base and Treble controls, something you should expect at this price point. Plus, a free app includes four equalizer presets plus the ability to create several more of your own custom presets, all of which can be accessed from the remote or the app. So between Equalizer Presets, Bass & Treble controls, you have the ability to adjust the sound to what works best for your music. I listen to mostly classical but also jazz and talk radio using iTunes, Pandora, AccuRadio and TuneIn Radio apps. I may not want strong bass with talk radio since it is only voices so I can quickly and easily select the appropriate setting/preset. The App presets include Rock - punches the bass, Hip Hop, punches bass and treble, Pop - punches the midrange and to a lesser extent the bass, and the `Altec' preset which leaves everything alone. Lastly the free app has four mood/visualizer sounds with videos like waves crashing at sunset, a cracking fire, streams...Read more ›
The unit itself is handsome, fairly compact, and fits nicely on a dresser, night stand, etc. The construction appears to be high quality. It has a density that contributes to the quality of the acoustics. The woofer generates nice base and is located on the bottom. I recommend putting it on a dense, solid surface to get the best results. The clarity of the treble is quite good.
If you are looking for "portable" then don't go here. This is not battery operated. It is easily transported from one room to another, but it is not something you can will want to pack and take with you. The remote works great with my Ipod Touch and there is some Altec Lansing Apps that you can download. One allows you to turn it into an alarm clock which is pretty cool.
I might change my mind and give it 5 stars, but since there are a lot of choices in the $100 range I feel I paid a slight premium for the product. The sound quality is certainly 5 stars and the value is 4 stars. If you want a great sounding unit, but don't want to overspend on a Bose system then give this a try. You won't be disappointed.
