With these dozen stories, Berry unpacks rich descriptive settings, characters, and imagery well worth lingering over. I enjoyed all the stories yet each one was a completely different experience. Also, Berry's strong control over her writing allowed me to relax while reading a genre which I was unfamiliar with and, until now, not remotely interested in.
I only have two complaints about this collection. Although they are my two favorite stories, "Blind Mary" and "Crossing the Water" did not close with as much finality as the others, and felt more like a possible set-up for a book. Or perhaps that is my wishful thinking, because I could have followed those characters for many hours.
My other complaint is that there wasn't a table of contents in my version of the book. I will re-read this collection, and I would like to jump easily from one story to the next. A minor thing, I know.
ALTERNATE ENDINGS has made me a fan of L Berry. I recommend this book to any reader who likes thoughtful entertaining literature.

So far, my favorite work has been ALTERNATE ENDINGS. In short stories every word must count. There's no room for fluff, and Berry delivers in all 12 of the selections. She galaxy trots from Egypt to Jurassic jungles to tropical isles, the moon, and even visits Eternity. She reinvents urban legends, twists fairy tales, and time travels. It's an eclectic group of stories in which there's something for everyone.
"Adventure in the Caldera" combines Jurassic Park with Survivor. "Like Shadow in Moonlight" mixes Legend with Men in Black. "Like Sunlight on Seawater" blends Aladdin and Sex in the City.
Berry's ability to see things in a unique and different light is reflected in her stories that delight, intrigue, frighten, and make a reader slightly uncomfortable, but in the best possible sense of the word.

Very interesting somewhat eclectic set of short stories. Most had a distinctly unexpected ending. I enjoyed them, and many of the plots could be full novels.
