In these hard economic times, in which savings-account yields are at an all-time low, stock-market volatility is a major concern, and real-estate appreciation is a thing of the past, Americans looking for alternatives to preserve or grow wealth may find this book to be a real eye-opener. Rice maintains that the key to long term wealth creation is loss avoidance, and he discusses options for building portfolios with built-in risk protection. The average consumer may not be aware that there are many other viable investment options besides traditional stocks and bonds, including private equity, venture capital, and more. Although hedge funds may have gotten a black eye during the Madoff era, he shows how active risk management using hedging strategies and a panoramic portfolio can help offset potential losses during times when stocks and bonds lose value. The writing is basic enough for novice investors, and financial-concept examples are easy to follow. In this fresh look at the old investment rules, the alternatives presented are convincing enough for readers to consider. --Cindy Kryszak

I especially appreciated the section on Portfolio construction, namely, breaking down your assets into 4 different categories:
•Job 1 (income)
•Job 2 (risk reducers)
•Job 3 (return enhancers)
•Job 4 (purchase power protection)
I have incorporated these categories into my own portfolio.

While the book does a very good job covering the topics, in the end it is more a review book to these investments and really does not help one either (1) create a game plan to build a portfolio on of Alternative Investments or (2) help learn how to find the real gems. Though in Bob Rice's defense he does say that many of the true AI investment gems are either closed or only available if you have 7 or 8 figure investments.
In the end it would be nice if Bob would have given some guidance how to find these investments, how to evaluate them, and how those of us who have saved $ but are not ultra wealthy can leverage AI.
For a reference book and general background, A. For a how to guide, I am not so generous.
