How to Burn California White Sage
For a total cleansing of your home, open all of your doors and windows of the space to be cleared. You are creating an exit point for old energies. Use a long-handled lighter, candle, or match stick to light the herbs till it begins to smoke. Once you see a flame, put out the fire so that the herb is smoldering, not burning. Allow the smudge herbs to smolder till the smoke circles in the air.

Please make sure you properly extinguish the smudge sticks after use. Keep ready a fireproof container such as a glass or ceramic dish or abalone shell to put the smudge in when you're done with it. It's ideal to extinguish out the herb in sand or simply press it against the bottom of the fireproof container. Always ensure that a smoldering smudge herb is out before leaving the room.

definitely different than incense, glad I tried

California White Sage, this was more of an impulse purchase as I was looking for copper incense bowls. it almost reminds me of a Christmas tree perhaps? pine? or maybe that was my imagination. it's a vaguely familiar scent, also not what I expected either. I am sure, like tastes, scents depend on the person. in my own opinion I would say it is not a bad or harsh smell at all. it does have a strong smell. didn't knock me over. creates tons of smoke. I put it in the window to ease up on the smoke and after about 10 minutes I checked and it had went out. not sure if the wind blowing effected it. probably is my guess.in the video I cut one stick in half. FYI, it will make a mess (forgot to mention this). flakes basically made a small mess so might want to cut it in a sink or make sure it's somewhere you can wipe or sweep up.I did read their website page which is recommended instructions for burning. that seemed more like instructions for "smudging" which of course have seen on TV/Movies but other than am not familiar in the least with and not why I purchased. was expecting instructions on actual burning mechanics. if they were there I missed them.not sure what else to say other than I would try the blue sage, any others sage or incense bundles, and the incense wood sticks (forgot their name. a lot of it is Santo something or other)edit (12/15/19): update - after having used this more I feel it would be helpful to share some more information. as a bundle, even in a half bundle, sage does not get to smoldering easily with just matches. you will waste a lot of matches so my guess is a gas grill lighter stick or even a lighter/zippo would make for easier lighting. I stated above I thought the open window blew out the sage but I do not feel that is the case anymore. I have attempted to light one half of a stick multiple times now and got it smoking really nice but it has never completely smoldered the entire half. every time it has burned out. might be a plus or minus but it's info. once you do get it smoldering, even partially, it will fill quite a large area with the scent. broken up into free pieces they appear to burn much more easy tho I have yet to just trying burning a large pile of free sage.
