Review

"Weighty yet incredibly useful reference for anyone who wants to learn more about alternative medicine therapies." - Cooking Light

"This book could save your life." -Julian Whitaker, M.D.

"If you are interested in alternative medicine of any kind, and want the security of authenticity in this field, you'¬?d better get Alternative Medicine: The Definitive Guide." -Deepak Chopra, M.D.

"In bookstores nationwide, titles on holistic cures by such authors as Andrew Weil, Dr. Dean Ornish and Christiane Northrop have been selling out for some time. Still, it may come as a surprise that one of the bestsellers in the field has no famous name attached: it's an 1,100-page reference book entitled Alternative Medicine: The Definitive Guide." -Publishers Weekly

Not only is this book a potential life- and money- saver for the layperson, it is also perfect for health care professionals as "alternative" medicine becomes more diverse and accepted. The entries are comprehensive and concise at the same time. It would be difficult to improve.

This was one of the first books I bought, when I started researching Alternative Med. It covers it all. If my child comes to me with anything from a splinter to mommy my ? hurts or I don't feel good. Same goes with anyone that has a complaint, I have many family and friends that call me regular and want me to look in that book and see what I need to do. It has saved many trips to the doctor, as well as guided me when there was a need for a professional. I can't say enough about this book but I will stop here.

Alternative Medicine is an exhaustive guide extremely useful for anyone with a health problem. And let's face, there are few of us who don't. This book contains 1233 pages of information to explain and help you learn about and recover from any illness or medical problem. Various forms of healing are discussed; acupuncture, aromatherapy, enzyme therapy, homeopathy, orthomolecular medicine, and Qigong are some of the methods mentioned. The beginning chapters tells how the body works and how to achieve medical freedom. Doctors sometimes don't have enough time to spend on patients and many people do not have insurance. Many drugs are toxic and have severe side effects. This information provides us with an alternative course of action. Alternative Medicine also provides places where you can get professional help if you need it. There is a chapter on autism, which I have not seen in any other alternative health book. Having this book on your shelf is like having a doctor in the house. It will provide you with a reference to good health. Over 400 leading physicans explain their treatments. Is it the only book you should own on Alternative medicine? Certainly not! But it is one of the most complete.

I had the first edition of Alternative Medicine and felt it was great. But, too often recommended supplements did not give doses. As newer therapies and research developed, it became a bit behind the times. The second edition is outstanding and I see that supplements usually have recommended amounts. I love the additional therapies. There is so much information it takes time to put it all together but is surely worth that effort. The Internet is a great source of info but you never know who is a crackpot out to make money. The editors of Alternative Medicine have done their homework. They present a wide range of information to choose from but it appears to me that they have left out the crackpots. It is a solid resource of information that I can assimilate along with allopathic recommendations from my M.D. I give it five stars!

This volume is huge so I would have really thought that it would have contained more useful information than it does. It's almost like a massive gleaning of a little bit of everything within the "alternative health" world but not much of anything in the way of substance and is already quite dated. Instead of being a definitive guide, it's more like an old style one volume encyclopedia(very superficial and badly researched tidbits that are already out of date as soon as it's published). This book does cover a wider range of topics than others that just cover one area of alternative medicine such as herbal treatments but the information is quite sparse and lacking in any kind of perspective about the validity of some of these treatments, some of which are on the further fringes of alternative health. Even the recommended reading lists at the end of each section seem to point the reader in the wrong directions if they were wanting to find good titles to further research these topics. Something about it's size and lack of relevant content reminds me a little too much of something that would have been published as an encyclopedia by Readers Digest or Time Life books.

This has to be one of the most useful books on alternative medicine ever published, and now it's been completely updated and revised in 2002. Instead of getting just one doctor's perspective, you get the experiences of over 400 physicians. Whether you want to learn more about acupuncture, applied kinesiology, and other therapies or need to look up the treatments for a particular health problem, this is the book to go to first. Highly recommended!

My dentist had this book in his office. After reading through many of the topic headings, I just had to get it. Now that I have it, I can't put it down. This book explains the difference between traditional and alternative med. as well as the different approaches to alternative medicine. It also directs you where to get more information on the subject you are look at.

It is the most comprehensive book on the subject, I have found so far. If you want to learn more about alternative medicine, this book will be a good pick.

I think this book is excellent! It goes into in-depth details to explain how different therapies work for different health problems. Different conditions are also listed from A-Z & with explanations of them. Different alternative treatments are listed & which type of natural medicine or natural doctors/therapies to go with.
