Alternative Therapies for PTSD: The Science of Mind–Body Treatments (The Science of Mind–Body Treatments) 1st Edition, Kindle Edition
Standard psychological treatments that are often used to treat PTSD, including cognitive behavioral therapy and prolonged exposure therapy, involve revisiting past traumas, which can cause intense anxiety for clients and often leads to treatment dropout. Author Robert Motta draws from his professional expertise as a trauma therapist, and from his personal experiences as a military veteran seeking effective, accessible methods of treating his own PTSD. He summarizes what is known—as well as what is still unknown or unproven—along with other strengths and limitations of various nontraditional approaches, including mindfulness meditation, yoga, acupuncture, animal‑ and nature-assisted therapies, emotional freedom techniques, and MDMA-assisted psychotherapy.
These treatments are appropriate for clients with a wide range of trauma histories including war, rape, childhood abuse, or a car accident. Clinical vignettes provide practical insights for implementing these interventions with individuals of various ages and backgrounds.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 12, 2020In his book, Alternative Therapies for PTSD, Dr. Motta does an exceptional
job of illustrating the long-lasting and life altering impact of PTSD and the need for alternative therapies. As an expert in the field and Vietnam veteran, who himself endured the persistent impact of trauma, Dr. Motta examines how traditional methods to the treatment of PTSD often times can fall short and increase treatment aversion - which in turn only adds to the treatment avoidance that is already a feature of this population. Ever since reading Dr. Bessel van der Kolk’s The Body Keeps the Score, I have become acutely aware of the visceral impact of trauma and need for alternative therapies that take the body into account. In his book Dr. Motta does just that by providing a review of empirically based mind-body interventions that go deeper than the traditional cognitive treatments commonly used. Alternative Therapies for PTSD is a highly informative must read for anyone who is working with clients with trauma, and due to its easy to read nature it is also the perfect resource for those whose lives have been affected by PTSD.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 13, 2020Dr. Motta provides the reader with a much-needed, easy to read, comprehensive resource. With growing evidence of the efficacy of alternative therapies, Dr. Motta has provided access to this information in an organized and straightforward way . For clinicians who have experienced the obstacles of trying to help people with PTSD, it is especially valuable to have an in-depth summary of alternative approaches, based on a review of empirical studies. For those suffering from PTSD, Dr. Motta provides a clear and empathic understanding of their struggles, as well as offering hope for possible treatment approaches. An invaluable addition to the clinician's library!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2020This book was extremely insightful regarding non-traditional treatment for trauma/ PTSD. If you are someone who wants to learn more about trauma, PTSD, and their treatment, this is the book for you. Dr. Motta does a wonderful job explaining the various forms of alternative therapy in colloquial and easy-to-grasp language. Whether you are a professional in the field or not, you will be able to understand the important topics discussed in this book. I highly recommend this book to not only those in the field, but anyone interested in learning about trauma, PTSD, and treatment that goes beyond traditional models.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 30, 2020This book captures your attention immediately with a narrative regarding the author’s own experience in Vietnam. Dr. Motta does an amazing job making you understand that PTSD is a condition that infiltrates humans to their core. He writes concisely and intelligently and keeps the reader engaged. The case is well made that alternate treatments such as EMDR, pet therapy, Yoga must be taken seriously as intervention options for trauma. I cite this book regularly in my graduate classes in crisis intervention and psychotraumatology.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2020A stellar book written by a skilled Psychologist and veteran who has experienced the pain and healing associated with PTSD. The author spent innumerable hoursresearching alternative therapies that have effectively treated people in a kind and gentle manner. This approach counters standard therapeutic techniques that have lead to high dropout rates. I highly recommend this book to any sufferer or clinician willing to explore new ideas written through the eyes of someone who has seen PTSD from both sides.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2021In this book, Dr. Motta summarizes cutting-edge research on alternative, holistic, and natural treatments for PTSD while also sharing his personal struggle with PTSD and clinical experience treating people with PTSD. Sadly, PTSD is difficult to treat because interventions usually include exposure to the feared event. Thus, many patients often avoid treatment or terminate treatment early. The alternative treatments discussed in this book provide hope and give people new, welcomed ways of healing. These methods (e.g., yoga, nature, acupuncture) are also empirically-supported, sometimes yielding stronger effects compared to traditional therapies (e.g., exposure, medication). So, if you struggle with PTSD or treat people with PTSD, read this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 28, 2020Dr. Motta intelligently presents several alternative treatments for trauma. Often traditional therapies have produced high rates of drop-out among trauma sufferers. Dr. Motta is highly effective in presenting accessible and gentler measures that are gaining popularity and empirical support for their use in treating trauma. Additionally, it is written for a diverse audience.
