Defaults: After some time of wearing it around my neck, the chain's black-ish plating has eroded and revealed a copper-like color, although it's an easy fix to find some higher quality chain at a crafts store and replace it. The cover isn't even, as it hangs off a bit on one side. Dirt/dust constantly gets in the joint, courtesy of the "door" (not that this is a default, just something to note. If you don't like cleaning it, don't buy it.) The covers on the back and front are plastic, but are firmly attached, but they can be "broken" (meaning they spin around loosely) if you put too much pressure on it (something my friend discovered when she was holding it). Two visible gears are a yellow plastic. Some dirt (or something like that) is in the mechanism, which greatly annoys me.
If this is your first pocket watch, you'll need to know that:.. 1. Hold down the button to open and close it, or else you will wear out the hitch that holds it shut. 2. When winding the watch, stop once you feel some resistance or you will damage the spring. 3. Over winding can cause it to jam, in which case you will need to open it up and manually start the spring.
When you look closer the cheap parts of the build start to show through more. Both the face and rear window are plastic, and are set in so loosely that you can spin them in place with light pressure from your fingers (that said, they didn't feel like they were going to fall out or anything). For the price I paid it's not a big deal, but it wasn't a pleasant surprise either.
My only real problem is that my winding mechanism seems to be wearing out after only about 2-3 weeks. I've been borderline paranoid about winding it, paying close attention to make sure I don't feel the mechanism getting tight and watching the spring through the window to make sure it didn't look stressed, but in the last few days I've noticed you can now feel the spring sometimes "snap" back loose as you wind it up. I'm not sure how bad that is or how much worse it will get (it has become more frequent over time), but it sure feels like it might be on it's last legs already. I've stopped using it in general in hopes that it will still be ok when I feel like showing it off - again, for $20 it's not TERRIBLE, but I'm pretty disappointed that in less than a month it's already feeling like I shouldn't be using my watch for fear of wearing it out.
Buy it if you want a one-off or occasional costume piece that actually works, but look elsewhere if you plan on any kind of regular use.
That being said I actually really like this little watch
