FootShape Toe Box
Traditional running shoes feature pointy toe boxes that squeeze the toes out of their natural position- increasing risk of bunions, hammertoes, and plantar fasciitis. Altra's FootShape toe box allows the toes to relax and spread out naturally and the big toe to remain in a straight position. This reduces over-pronation, enhances stability, and assists with a powerful toe-off to maximize running performance.
Zero Drop Platform
Elevated heels in running shoes promote poor form by encouraging high-impact overstriding. Every Altra shoe features a Zero Drop platform that places the heel and forefoot the same distance from the ground. This aligns the foot, back and body and encourages low-impact landing.
TrailClaw and Removable Stone Guard
Conquer the gnarly terrain with our TrailClaw outsole technology. Our trail shoes feature canted lugs positioned beneath the metatarsals to provide traction where your foot needs it most. Each lug is strategically placed to ensure fast uphill climbs, stable descents, and superior traction across muddy terrain. The removable stone guard is optional and sits beneath the insole, deflecting rocks for a smooth, stable ride.

The size I initially ordered was a bit short and my toe kept hitting the front. There's a bunch on imp. info on the inside of the box (see attached pic) that I found very useful. Will post an update after I exchange this with a pair that's one size up.
When I tried Altras at the store a few years ago... each model fit differently... like they used different foot templates for each version of their shoes. The superior was the best so I bought that one and never looked back. It was in my mind perfect. It transformed my trail running experience.
But - Compared to the last version which I felt was perfect - The cushioning feels stiffer... the shoes feel slightly heavier, the laces are now super hard, unlike the previous soft ones... and the laces are shorter. Also, I had to send the first amazon shipped pair back after the front toe weld de-laminated three days into breaking them with long walks... also the left shoe didn't fully match the right shoe width/seam wise in the lacing area.
Sad state of affairs that quality control takes a back seat to manufacturing costs...
However, as I said, after getting my replacement pair (super easy through amazon) these are in my opinion still the best option if you want protection from stones and don't want to look odd in you vibram five fingers anymore. :)
Excellent for running on trails and also road. Good ventilation but a little waterproof so they resist a little moisture.
1) My complaint is that Altra's running shoes have a higher stack height than these. If Altra lowered the stack height of their running shoes, I'd buy them as well.
2) Wish they were a little stiffer for cushioning.
I'll try it without the removable rock shield and possibly without the normal insert and let you know if that feels any different. Also, I usually wear an 11.5 E in New Balance and needed to go up to a 12 in the Altra for the right fit. Since Altra defaults to a wider toe box, extra wide sizing is not an issue.
Update on running without the rock shield: It was still too cushioned for my tastes. I ended up sending to a friend since he is a fan of the Altra line and not bothered by the cushioned feel. I just discovered that Altra has a racing shoe with less cushioning (15 mm vs 21 mm) which I'll try soon. Hope that is the answer!
The shoe also grips well and is very durable. I've done everything in these from 10 mile trial runs to 20 mile hikes and overnight backpacking with 50 pound loads.
These shoes have an incredibly squishy feel when you stand in them or just walk around. Even though the stack height is only 21mm (zero drop), I feel like I'm walking on marshmallows. You can take out the insert though, removing 2mm of cushioning from the stack height. It feels much, much more minimal. But I actually keep the inserts in because my running form isn't so great yet, and the added cushioning is helpful when I run faster than 4:30/km pace (which is fast for me!). I use minimal shoes to improve my form, but the Superior 2's are great for running longer distances or practice races.
