It was honestly a bit of a learning curve. I planned to go to a small ocean cave on the first day and a waterfall on the second day. Well, the cave photos turned out absolutely terribly. Nothing the fault of the filters, just inexperience. Stacking filters increasingly caused a pink hue that was not easily fixable in post. The ocean was so windy that the camera and tripod actually wanted to fly away, so camera shake was inevitable. Focus issues, better to focus first, then apply filter. On and on, I was making mistakes.
Learning from these mistakes, my day at the waterfall went great. Using the ND8 with overcast skies (and while winter here and the trees are bare, they blocked additional light.) The water looked absolutely fantastic.
I think they're great for learning with. I believe I'll keep using these, but I've already done a bunch more research and I think I'll buy a couple different ones. I think an ND10 would do me better for brighter days.
Either way, these are a ton of fun to mess with and I'm glad to have taken my first foray into it.

Purchasing this set is a no-brainer. For under $20, you get crystal clear filters that can be stacked to reduce the light coming into your lens. While I got the timely warning about the eclipse and the incompatibility of these filters for that purpose, I was not going to be using these as eye protection-- they were there to reduce light! The three of these filters stacked, plus the highest F value of my camera and some very quick experimentation with shutter speed produced some great images. During totality, the filters were quickly screwed off the end of my 70-200 F2.8L lens, and then screwed back on as the sun began to peek back around the other side of the moon. The photos were taken with the filters on.
The other photo was taken of the state capital in Pierre South Dakota after sunset, and yes the sky really was pinkish-- the result of western wildfires. The surface of the small lake was lightly rippled, but the filters allowed me to open that shutter for a longer exposure, effectively smoothing the surface. It will be fun to continue to experiment and learn more creative ways to utilize this set. So what are you waiting for? Buy The Set.
