Cons: Good Lord these slow speeds are inexcusable!! 43MB/s Read & 39MB/s Write.... are you kidding me? How did this get so many positive reviews?! If asthetics are all you care about it def passes. Small, light weight, solid.. potentially perfect. I included pictures of my speeds with Crystal Disk Mark and two more pictures to show what the drive is capable of along with is bigger brother the PCIe version.
So, because the first speed test of 43MB/s was so ridiculously low I tested again over USB C 3.1 on the back of my Ryzen based desktop. Speeds got slower!! Literally cut in half at 23.5 MB/s. This WD Blue 250GB M.2 SSD is capable of at least 440MB Read & 300+ Write so I'm not getting anywhere near what I should. Disappointed.
Finally, if you are looking for self made fast storage get a UGreen External USB 3.0 enclosure and Any SSD and expect much much better speeds. Look at those speeds and the UGreen drive is half the cost! I can recommend this drive due to performance. If you have an M.2 lying around it's better than nothing... but not by much.
If you value speed steer clear of this enclosure!

This is an edit after using my brain. The adapter and M.2 SSD fit just fine. I found out that first M.2 I put in was bowed for some reason. I did not any problem installing on the adapter but I could see an upward bow. When putting every away, I finally figured out what I was doing wrong. I recommend this item for purchase and change my rating to five stars.
*make sure you test yours*
I replaced a 250GB M.2 SATA III NVMe drive with a 1TB PCIe and wanted something that would allow me to use the SATA drive after taking out of laptop. This worked great - took out 2 end screws, slid out interface, popped in the old M.2 SATA SSD, slid interface back into case, replace 2 screws and you are ready to go - took about 5 minutes - last pic above.
I transferred some files and did the CrystalDisk tests and did not notice it becoming warm at all. The 1st attached CrystalDisk score shows the speeds using USB 3, 2nd score is using my USB C to USB C and last score is speeds while drive was in laptop. As you can see speeds are pretty fast compared to internal speed.
Just make sure what type of M.2 "key" you have . 4th pic shows the 2 type of keys - if you have both its probably using a SATA connection and limited to around 540 mbps. If only has M key then its using PCIe connector and speeds will be much faater than SATA. On the computer make sure the interface/connector does NOT have a notch for the B key and if it doesnt you should be able to use an SSD with M (PCIe) key.

The plus side of this drive case, is there is no protruding appendages (USB drive male end) sticking out of it. (I have one and I like it ~ but it didn't come with a protective cover to protect that USB appendage). Once this drive case is assembled with your M.2 drive inside, you plug the power cord into it .. then plug it into your computer. Works just fine.
The 3 stars is because it is difficult to work with getting your drive screwed on to the drive board (that comes with the unit). The plus side to that? ... this unit comes with a small assortment of tiny screws for mounting your M.2 to the drive board. :) Good buy and fulfills the need you have to own it. I am sure it will last for years.
