5.0 out of 5 stars Classic pulpy SF cocktail with a twist of modern
By MK on June 19, 2018
Alvin Baylor Lives! is a debut novel, and it’s a great one! It sets up like a lot of classic SF, where the main character is at the cusp of change, and the reader is dropped in alongside to pick up the setting as the story develops.
It’s pulpy in that it’s not overly polished, definitely not overwritten, and it gets a tad darker than some of the classics. That’s also part of what makes it a great read.
The science is there, too, but not the exposition that often overwhelms and slows down many hard SF novels.
If you like a lot of mid-twentieth century science fiction, dig the occasional noir, work with computers (and I don’t mean social media), or for a giant company, you’ll like this book.
