This is a good size for me right now, it fits on the table just so. I just started using it and I'm not pressing very hard, but I know I'm cutting through the fabric and I can't even see the mark on the mat. I really like the rotary cutter/mat combination. Much easier than scissors for most pattern cutting. I think this mat seems sturdy enough. You do want a firm surface underneath it because the mat is a little bendy, so you need a table or a board - not carpet.

The mat is terrific but the grid is not square. Over the 42" length it is almost 1/8" off square. For most projects this probably will not create a problem but if you MUST have absolutely square cuts do not use the grid. I will make the necessary adjustments to compensate when I need the absolute square or use my T square to attain it. Other than that I love the mat.

I got a nice big one, 36x48, to cover my drafting table. I use it as a workspace for leatherworking, day-in and day-out. Lots and lots of cutting, with a mix of rotary tool and utility knife, cutting through cloth, leather, bookbinding board, and varying thickness of glue/epoxy.

I kinda figured this would (ultimately) be a disposable item with wear, but I didn't think it would start showing damage within a month or two. It's already starting to shed little green bits on my work. At this rate, I'm probably gonna have to flip it and use the black side within another couple months. I figured I'd be able to use this thing for a couple of years and then need to replace it, but I'll be lucky if I can stand to use it for a year. So, there's that.

Also, I recommend not putting anything even remotely warm on it: laptop (or laptop charger brick), iPhone charger brick, mug of coffee, bowl of soup…doesn't matter. As soon as the mat heats and expends, it's pretty much gonna be warped from then on out. The only thing I've not yet tried is to just bring the whole thing out and lay it on a hot sidewalk for a while, and then bring it back inside to my cold floor. Could fix it, could make it worse. Not sure I wanna risk it.

One final thing: I've seen Alvin products pretty much all my life, and I think they used to uphold a much higher quality than this. The screen-printed grid and numbering is really fuzzy, completely imprecise, and roughly the quality I would expect from a Chinese knock-off product.

I have still yet to use the cutting Mat because it came folded into three part leaving it warped. I assumed that it would just flatten out over time but it's been two weeks and the mat looks exactly the way I unfolded it and I did lay it on a flat surface with weights but that still didn't do the trick. I heard really good reviews about the board but I can't even use it!!!!! So how am I supposed really know how the mat works. I'm hoping I can figure out an alternative to flattening the surface because it's frustrating to not be able to work on projects.
Pros: (my mat)doesn't smell
Cons: warped to the 100th power

This mat is just what I needed and does all it promises to do. I doubted the self-healing part but it really does not show any cuts after using it for over 6 months. I don't use it every day and I use a Tonic Studios 806 Mini Rotary Perforator as my cutting tool so other uses and durations may tax it more. But for my use it works great. I make card-stock hang tags for my handmade products I sell at craft fairs and perforate one part of the tag to use as an inventory management tool. The little perforator works great with this mat. The lines printed on the mat help me keep the cutting edge straight and it has a great feel to cut against. The price is outstanding for what it does for me. I'm a very happy camper.

I just started using this mat and noticed once that the grid is not very accurate, unfortunately I noticed this 2 days to late when making some cuts and having them all short, now have to just eat the loss and throw it away

Surprised? Yes, I was. But it's been 4 years since I bought this 42 x 30 mat. No disappointments. No regrets. It still looks brand new. I'm still happy.

My original LARGER than large flexible plastic mat was very expensive. It was made for blade cuts. NOT! It got grooves, pits, and was not easy to store. The cutting marks were not exact enuf. It slid all over the table top. When in doubt, I threw it out! Never looking back. Very good move. Cause this Professional Cutting Mat will go on forever. And if I need another size -- I will buy it!

All I'm really doing is cutting stuff like photo paper, cardstock, chipboard/paperboard, and cardboard, but I'm literally just using a standard one edge razor blade held in a $1 box cutter and so far this mat doesn't show a mark even with the amount of pressure you need to cut stuff like chipboard and cardboard.

It may not seem like a big deal, but the hole in the mat is extremely helpful since I can hang this on the back of my closet door. Otherwise it would be awkward to store, and it would not be easy to cut your own hole in this thing. (Maybe an electric drill with a new rather sharp bit would work but I bet the hole wouldn't be very clean.)

Alvin is the brand that my digital media arts school uses and the ones there, even after constant heavy use, never seem to have any cut marks in them that I'd notice while using the mats.

I got an 18x12" Alvin mat here for something like $10 which is somewhere between half and one third as much as Michael's (big chain craft store) wanted for the same size thing in some other brand that I didn't even recognize.
