Editorial Reviews

Since the formation of Alien Ant Farm in 1995, the quartet has enjoyed worldwide success. Over the course of their four studio albums, cumulative sales surpass five million units. The band built a massive following on the road early in their career via high profile 2001 runs with Linkin Park, Papa Roach, Warped, and as the headliner on an MTV presented Fall Tour. In 2002, fame spread across the world, bringing Alien Ant Farm to the major European festivals, Australia's Big Day Out, and a headline run in Japan. The following year they returned to Europe with Metallica, and to this day the band has steadily delivered audiences in territories across the globe.

Spring has arrived; my favorite Spring & Summer music band has finally returned.

Die-hard band fans are usually conflicted about the group they cant's stop listening to. One hand one, they get frustrated that music they enjoy is being missed by so many. Conversely, they enjoy that the music is not quite mainstream - it's like a private club with a few members who get it. That is my feeling with AAF. Their first release, now 14 years in the past (us young guys are getting old) had radio success with Smooth Criminal which allowed Movies to become a hit single as well. That success never did repeat to the same level again, and I fear this album will be no different. And I'm conflicted in that same sort of way.

[A]lways [A]nd [F]orever does not disappoint this AAF fan. I suspect anyone who has followed the band all these years will this 4th album was stuck in limbo will enjoy it as well. The unique vocals, great lyrics and uplifting sounds are all back. The lyrical themes of failing yet optimistic love are still there, full of energy and youth. It's a spring/summer album to me, most listenable on a warm sunlit day.

"Homage" was the first single released months back, a very radio friendly song one hopes would receive some play. "Burning" has those catchy AAF style lyrics and rhythms. "American Pie" reminds me of "Crickets" from the previous album (the line "Red haired White skinned Blue eyed girl" will be stuck in your mind forever). "Sidelines" and "Better Weather" are more of my highlighted tracks.

Great album, just please don't make us wait until 2029 for the next one.

I have been an AAF fan since I bought ANThology in the summer of 2001 and saw them in concert that fall. I was excited to see this album release and bought it right away. I have to admit, I was underwhelmed after my first listen. I don't know what it was - maybe I wasn't in the right mood at the time. A week or so later I listened to it again and LOVED it. It has been in heavy rotation ever since. So glad AAF made this album, and hope for more in the future.

The first three and last three songs are really good, classic Ant Farm. Everything in between is lame poppy radio stuff that sounds like a mixture between Coldplay, Maroon 5 and Ed Sheeran. Very schizophrenic album, and I say this as a big fan of their previous three.

If you enjoyed Alien Ant Farm's other albums, you will be extremely happy with the results of this album. It took them awhile to make it, and it shows. I'd honestly recommend 10 of the 13 tracks on their own (the others just haven't grown on me as fast). They are catchy, they rock, and the lyrics show how much they have grown since the release of ANThology. While I don't think it quite measures up to the fantastic TruANT, it comes close to the mark, which says a lot for how much talent these fellows have.

Alien Ant Farm never has received the type of sales or airplay that bands such as The Killers or Fall Out Boy have, but they are talented enough to certainly be mentioned in the same sentence with those bands. People use various terms to describe them; they aren't pop punk, they aren't entirely alternative, they're too late to be considered post-grunge...so they just kind of fall in wherever. Up to this point, they've mostly been remembered for a quirky cover of Michael Jackson's "Smooth Criminal" nearly a decade and a half ago.

The entire landscape of the music scene has changed since they released 2003's TRUant, their last major label release that received any type of promotion. In reality, their sound has not changed all that much; once again they fall back on clever lyrical quips, bouncy and sometimes aggressive guitar riffs, and theatrical vocals that certainly at times recall Brandon Flowers and even Meatloaf. But the fascinating thing about "Always and Forever" is that it does not sound out of place at all in 2015. Part of the reason is that stylistically, they are a better fit for the times than they were in, say 2007, when self-important, narcissistic eyeliner bands ruled the airwaves. Another reason is simply that they have improved their songcraft on this release. "Burning," "Our Time," and "American Pie" all have great pop hooks, while songs like "Let Em Know" and "Sympatico" recall their old sound. This is a band that many people didn't "get" the first time around. But these songs are good enough that you can enjoy the album on its own terms, and despite a few missteps, AAF has returned in fine fashion.
