As other reviewers have said, this is a book that tells the story of the dogs and cats that John and Lisa have fostered or adopted. It describes the different personalities and backgrounds of each furry guest in their home. I have spent some time volunteering at the Atlanta Humane Society. Any volunteer who works with dogs or cats will tell you they get much more out of it than they put into it. As John explains in the book each dog and cat is different. Some come in well adjusted, others come in having had challenging lives. There is nothing more rewarding that rehabilitating one that has had a tough time and finding it a wonderful new family to love it. John covers several of those cases. This book is a must read for anyone who loves dogs and cats and particularly those interested in helping them.

I love the stories about cats and dogs. The book is well written, well formatted and even has a table of contents. I admire the author and his wife for fostering all those animals that needed help, and for being active members of the humane society.
What I don't like is that 14% of this book contains a preview of another book by the same author. That one is a 'murder mystery' and of no interest to me. If I buy a book about animal fostering that has 127 pages, I expect them all to be about that subject.

It is a collection of humane interests and has some hilarious mishaps which reminds all dog owners of some of the things their own dogs have done. Always a Next One by John Leonard is a delightful collection of stories gleaned from years of fostering and adopting misfit and needy dogs and cats. What shined through to me as I read the stories in this book is how committed and big-hearted John and his wife have been to the cause of saving animals who have suffered and been abandoned at the hands of other humans. They opened their hearts and homes to over a hundred dogs - their revolving door, he called it. He tells of rehabilitating, healing, training and loving animals until their just right forever home could be found, and sometimes that home was their home! I liked when John shared some of his training techniques and would have liked even more detail about that. And I appreciated that he wrote with seriousness and humor, making for an enjoyable read. Thank you, John and Lisa for all you have done for homeless dogs (and cats) and all you continue to do. The world would be a better place with more people like you in it.
