I loved writing Claire andMichael's story. Their romance is fresh for me even today. The originalversion, published as DANGEROUS ATTRACTION by Harlequin, won the 2001 New Jersey Romance Writers' Golden Leaf for Best First Book andthe Lorie from the From the Heart Romance Writers. I wanted to set thestory in Maine, where I live. Having studied French Literature in college, Icouldn't resist giving Claire a French-Canadian family background and putting alittle French in her mouth.
ALWAYS A SUSPECTintroduces characters and a plot line that continue in my Task Force Eagleseries. If you found Michael Quinn's partner Rick Cruz as much a charmer and ahunk as I did, you can find him in NEVERSURRENDER pursuing El Águila's gang and the infamous Raoul Olívas.

After the deaths of two husbands and a fiancé, Claire Saint-Ange is branded the Widow Spider in her coastal Maine town. Tormented by threatening phone calls and desperate to prove her innocence, Claire hires a P.I. But her attraction to the rugged investigator poses an even greater threat. She can’t risk losing someone she cares about… not again. Never again. Two tragic losses cause federal agent Michael Quinn to submit his resignation, but he’s forced into one last gig—spend Christmas investigating the widow’s connection to her last husband’s drug smuggling. Uncovering this lovely, mysterious woman’s darkest secrets should be just an assignment, but her gentle soul and passion break down his walls and make him long to believe in her innocence. The frozen Maine landscape, deadly attacks, and shocking revelations test Claire and Michael at every turn—but it's the blazing desire between them that threatens their very lives.

The attraction between the MC's is almost immediate. Even though "Quinn's" mind battles that attachment. Everything points to her being the Widow Spider, not an innocent. But as time goes on, more mysteries, more attacks manifest. Its confusing for both of them because nothing seems to fit together, they just can't connect the dots. The whole town hated her, snubbed her, supected her, accused her. With very little real proof against her. There was an exception or two but the hatred was well demonstrated. There were plenty of twists and turns and people with their own agenda's in this story. It did start out kind of slow in the beginning, and I wasn't sure if I was going to like that but I'm glad I continued because it was pretty good.
I wanted to talk about one of Quinn's supporters in the story.

Susan Vaughan’s ALWAYS A SUSPECT is but another example of her stellar weaving of a romantic suspense, both the plot and the inch by inch growth of two people discovering what secrets and passions lie under the icy façade of the other, as they fight to solve a mystery and save their own lives.

Strong, silent, and scrumptious Michael Quinn has met his match in sultry, but subdued Claire Saint-Ange, who despite her widow’s wear and his suspicion she has put more than one husband in the ground, catapults him into rescue-mode and sets his heart and soul on fire. But Michael has his own secrets and deep, dark regrets.

Vaughan deftly intertwines the building of her characters relationships with solving the mystery, revealing one tidbit at a time to the startling conclusion. Her characters have real-to-life depth. The reader feels for their agony and roots for the healing that will come with a happily-ever-after.

I love Susan Vaughan’s books and eagerly await each new one.

This is well-written and really kept my attention to the end. Claire has lost 2 husbands and a fiance due to accidents and is treated with suspicion in her town. Michael, a PI with secrets of his own, is assigned to investigate her. The situation becomes complicated when they fall in love.

What a nail-biter! This book was amazing! I was on the edge of my seat for the longest time trying to figure out who the bad buy was and when it was revealed, I was surprised. I read another of the author's works last year, TWICE A TARGET, and the experience was similar. The only difference is that I had a glimmer of whodunit in that one just before it was revealed.

This is a truly great story about two people who have experienced a lot of heartache in their lives. Michael is a DEA agent that is trying to recover from a couple bad incidents in his life. Claire is a pariah in her town because they feel she has murdered two husbands and a fiance. The story just builds and builds, layer upon layer, as the main characters strive to find out who is behind all the deaths and other unfortunate occurrences. The suspense is pretty riveting.

This book is billed as the prequel to the first book in the Task Force Eagle series. Having read the blurb for that book, I realized that the cocky sidekick in this book, Ricardo Cruz, is the focus in that one. I'm looking forward to reading his story, as well.

I highly recommend this book. It has more depth and grit than a lot of books in the romantic suspense genre. It is truly a page-turner. Kudos to the author for another great book!

4.5 stars This is an excellent contemporary romantic suspense book. Claire is the main female character. Her background helps her to translate books for English to French & visa versa. To date she has lost 2 husbands and her fiancee due to sudden deadly 'accidents'. I love her strength and femininity. Law enforcement and others dubbed her the Widow Spider. The majority of her community as well as DEA believe this and they are trying to prove it. In comes our alpha male character Michael (Quinn). He was sent in to get close and uncover her secrets. In the beginning he saw the beautiful and dangerous shell eventually he saw past her physical beauty to her inner one. This book has lots of unexpected twists and turns which keep you captive until the very last page. Excellent book Ms. Vaughan. I look forward to reading future books by this author. I received a free copy of this book from the author solely in exchange for an honest opinion.
