I've had my WiFlyer for a few months now and am very happy, overall, with the product. I cover an 18 county area, in a mainly rural state, and travel all over the state for meetings and trainings. The mix of dialup and broadband connections can be a pain. The WiFlyer has given me the flexibility to use any type of connection that I come across (Well, almost any, you can't use it on a digital phone system. Not sure why, but that was very disappointing when I spent a week in a room with a digital phone in at and was stuck using a regular phone line, plugged into the wall, to access my dial up account.). The WiFlyer interface is browser based, just plug it in and turn on your computer. Once the computer locates the WiFlyer signal you open your web browser and set up your connection. Its very easy to use and has worked great with both my work and personal laptops (Dells running XP Pro) and my Dell Axim PocketPC.

Sometimes the signal seems to be a little weak, I'd like to see it come with an external antannae (you can buy one, but you know, should you really have to?). And I always feel like I have to baby it, not sure why but it just feels fragile to me. That being said, I've had it in my computer bag and hauled it all over the place and haven't had any problems with it. I've never been able to get the dial up accelerator program to work either. I might use it if I could, but have had no success so far.

It's a great product. If you're on the road and need a great solution for dealing with a variety of Internet connections, or if you want to make your dial up connection wireless, this is for you. Easy to use, simple to hook up and gives you wireless access anywhere you go. Well worth the price.

Setup was very easy. Connected to my ISP every time. In spite of what the WiFlyer tech support says, the LAN connection on the back of the WiFlyer CAN be used to link the WiFlyer to other networks, not just a single computer. In my case, I am using an 802.11g network with a physical LAN connection to the WiFlyer. Result, WiFlyer fits transparently into the network and I still get to use the 802.11g transfer speeds.

On the pricy side, but I've been waiting for something like this for ages!

If you are going to buy the WiFlyer then you should know this:

"The following are the only known incompatible ISPs:

Compuserve

AT&T GlobalNet

Roadrunner dial-up

Walmart Connect"

This comes from the Always On web site, and could prevent a lot of confusion for customers. Always On has no way of making their product work with these ISPs and will normally not even respond to questions about them.

Never-the-less, it seems like a great product, if you have the right ISP. I had no problems communicating with it as soon as I plugged it in. But after several hours of tweaking, I found out it wouldn't work with my ISP. I wish I knew that before I ordered it!

The WiFlyer works very well, I am able to wirelessly use my dialup connection to the internet from anywhere in the house. I think its priced a little high but it's the only one of its kind that I have found.

I bought this in early November of 2005 before a trip I took in December. I only needed to use it once with an Earthlink dial-up account. Worked fine. Once. After that, it remained in safe storage away from heat, away from cold, away from the sun, away from handling. In fact, it was stored safely in my laptop travel case, which was stored safely in a closet. No one could have bothered it, since I live alone. I did not need to use again until 6 weeks ago. When I got the Wiflyer out and plugged it in ... NO wireless signal. None. Kaput. My laptop connected just fine to other wireless, just not the Wiflyer because there was NO SIGNAL AT ALL, so there was NOTHING TO CONNECT TO. The little wireless LED in the middle front of the unit does not come on. Of course, the unit is no longer under warranty, so that's the end of that.

Honestly, I think the product is just not well made. The concept was excellent, and yours may work for you for a while, just as mine did. But I wouldn't expect this to last for very long if used frequently. Perhaps some sort of minor jostling caused the unit to fail? I'll never know. And I sure won't buy another one.

***** UPDATE *****

I emailed techsupport at [...] about my difficulty with the wireless LED staying off and no wireless signal being broadcast.

A Kid's Review on December 10, 2004
Hi,

Just wanted to tell you how nice your WiFlyer is working. Using Apple G4 12" 867 laptop with OS 10.3.6.

Installation took about five minutes and it's been working great.

Thanks for a good product.
