This is the first book I’ve read from this author so perhaps I just didn’t have sufficient background to feel more connected to the characters or story. That being said, the names and nicknames got confusing at times. Everyone had 2 names and I needed to take notes to keep them straight (I didn’t). Even without that factor, I quite often had to reread to figure out who was talking at times, especially when there are three or more involved in the conversation. This would be a minor issue if I were more engaged in the story.
Meg is 34 I think, married for 10 years when she catches her husband in the act of cheating. Aside from her decision to go to a bar (alone no less) for rebound sex seems a little reckless to say the least, but she slips into that character pretty seamlessly for someone who’s been married for a decade. On top of that, she was pretty much paired with her husband since high school (was he her first? Her only?) so it’s all the more odd that she could be so comfortable and knowledgeable with the behavior of a trolling woman at a singles bar. She’s supposedly a socialite (daddy’s money) but blends seamlessly into being penniless (even though it’s daddy’s money, the hubs somehow got it all) and living with ‘the poor kids’ from high school.
At times it read like a young adult book because the characters seemed so immature. There was some interesting banter and good sex (and typical misplaced angst), yet my interest waned as the story went on. In the end, which is really not the end but a cliffhanger, I am still not engrossed enough with the story and characters in book 1 to read book 2. I may be slightly curious but not compelled. This author has high ratings so maybe I just missed something.
This book made me laugh out loud more than I can remember doing in a long time. Meg is absolutely hilarious. Emilia did an amazing job developing her character. People were quick to judge her - she is viewed as a spoiled party girl - but holy cow is she so much more.
Marc is one of my favorite male characters Emilia has written. He’s had a hard life; he’s a protector. He is all about family. And boy can he be one alpha jerk. But holy cow - he’s sexy; when he loves he loves hard; and he’s so sweet at times he just melts your heart.
There’s so much laughter in this book. There is drama. There is bromance. There is so much amazing friends and family you want to become part of their world. I need the second book now!
Can’t say enough about the Emilia Finn Series. Loved this author enough that I’m going to my first ever Book Signing Event just for her!
Start at the beginning with the Rollin On Series! Read all of the Series to understand the characters.
While the stories might come across as being all about “hot men and women in intimate situations and dropping of the “*f*” bomb…the reality is that the characters and storytelling are all about the meaning of Family, Loyalty and Love. Then re-read all of them again and maybe even a third time - because Emilia Finn is a brilliant, sneaky author! She is an author that values and respects all the roles that men and women have to maneuver through in our social world today; her perspective is invaluable. The stories won’t solve all the world’s problems but makes the burden lighter while we try to.

Laugh & Cry, Scream & Shout!
...or more! I'm a voracious, very eclectic reader. Literally Fantasy, Space Science Fiction, Military, Law Enforcement Thrillers/Mysteries to Regency and the Paranormal. Throw in Classic Darcy and Anne of Green Gables. Yes, I'm current on the Outlander novels. My family has been involved in law enforcement, the military and martial arts. Emilia covers it all!
I started with Pawns In The Bishop’s Game of the Checkmate Series and followed with the Rollin On Series when I realized Rollin started it all!. On to the Survivor Series to get the whole picture. l love, love the Rollin On Crew. But Pawns ... Kane ... well.. Sealed the deal! OMG! I'm re-reading all the series' before reading Checkmate’s Rise Of The King. Laughing and crying and seeing so much more in the characters and storytelling. Ya know it’s bad when I’m following the author on Face Book. Five stars for them all! I don't look for editing errors but do blink a few times when I come across them. The author works with a great group of people to ensure a smooth read. There are some amazing, gifted writers out there who deserve to have their visions and stories told.
(Maybe I'd better hurry up in my re-reading (going for a 4th re-read of whole series.)but wanted to leave this review before I was buried in the stories again.) If not for the E-reader our house would be wall-to-wall books with narrow pathways. Thanks to Kindle Unlimited or we'd be eating Ramen and drinking only water!
There are only a few authors that I sincerely want to see in every format-hardbound to audio. This author is one I hope to see in those other formats.
These novels do contain mature subject matter, sexual content, violence, profanity, and scenes that may trigger strong feelings.
The sexual tension between Meg and Marc is off the charts!
Meg is my favorite character in this whole series. She had me laughing out loud more than once.
This book is a cliff hanger, but it is totally worth it! I can’t wait for the next one to be released!
