I really enjoyed the authors descriptions of the world and the magical creatures, but also kept the story current. These are kids that are living in our present world, with a parallel world of magic they are dealing with. It has a very “Harry Potter-esque” feel and I liked that. There are some holes in the story, I wanted to know more about her parents and if they were magic themselves. But the ending wraps up the story nicely and leaves open the possibilities for future books.
I didn’t find any issues with grammar or punctuation as previous reviewers had mentioned, it seems formatted perfectly. I would recommend this book to anyone that likes easy to understand magic/fantasy books and anyone that enjoyed Harry Potter. I would also say this is a safe book for younger readers, there isn’t anything to worry about subject-matter wise. I look forward to more of the series!
Recurrent and resounding lessons throughout the entire book are self-sufficiently and, conversely, teamwork. With regards to self-sufficiency, Alyssa uses her perseverance and her determination to defeat evil and make it back to her family. Also, without giving too many spoilers, I appreciate how Alyssa and the diverse group of characters become a family unto themselves.
The author is a great storyteller- highly imaginative and super descriptive. I was able to visualize and see the book as if it were a movie in my mind. The novel is fun, inventive, and fast-paced. This book is a little Alice in Wonderland mixed with Harry Potter. I think this book would be a fantastic read for any young adult or child at heart. This book can and should be read and re-read! Five out of five stars!
As the book progress we get to find out who is causing the magic, and notes. It’s two wizard with the name of Beau Duchamp, and Simon. But Beau Duchamp is the one who made the marks on the babysitter, and making the babysitter fall asleep. Simon tells Alyssa the true reason as to why he wants Alyssa. He wants to kidnap Alyssa and take her to the Fiji Islands to kill her. He has a dark magic center there, and needs Alyssa for a secret type of purpose.
As the book progresses Beau Duchamp picks up Alyssa in a helicopter, and takes her to the Fiji Islands, to an island of Yanowic, which is inhabited by wizards. This is where the book really begins to get fun. So if you are after a fantasy book which is a bit different to typical fantasy books, then give this book a read. I’m sure you will have an enjoyable read.
