Raised in a military family, DR. LAMAR HARDWICK has been privileged to travel the world at a young age with his siblings and parents. Lamar is a graduate of Concordia University Wisconsin. He also holds a Master of Divinity degree from Emory University, a Doctor of Ministry degree from Liberty University, and Clinical Pastoral Education from St. Luke's Training and Counseling Center in Atlanta, GA. Lamar is a husband, father of three boys, and a pastor of a church located in Lagrange, GA.

Dr. Hardwick is a man of biblical integrity which is what I appreciated most. However, I also appreciated his vulnerability in sharing intimate details of his struggle with how his difference (I don't like the word 'disability!') has impacted his life. As a Christian believer, I greatly appreciated his willingness to share. Autism is impacting life everywhere and I feel like the church is way behind in recognizing the monumental impact autism is having and will continue to have. We can minister to this population if we are willing to think outside of our confines and traditions. Thank you, Dr. Hardwick, for speaking out and speaking up for this wonderfully unique population!

Dr. Lamar Hardwick invites you to walk a mile in his shoes through the pages of this book. He transparently weaves together his faith journey and life experiences before and after his adult diagnosis of Autism. Dr. Hardwick’s words offer hope to a wide audience. Persons living with Autism and those who love them are obvious candidates. However, those facing a host of other invisible disabilities and anyone who has ever felt different would also stand to gain valuable insight. Dr. Hardwick's reference to John the Baptist beautifully illustrates his own approach to life as shared in this eye-opening book. “His life began in a way that he didn’t choose for himself, . . . but John did choose to live his life in a way that made a tremendous difference.”

After reading about autism for years it was a breath of fresh air to get another account from a POC. Autism Spectrum Disorder is not rare, yet it's RARE to find a African American man with a platform like this to educate, inspire, and empower. Not only is Dr. Lamar reaching the general population of those living with the condition, but more inspiring is he's reaching black boys & men. In a society that in many cases has labeled black boys & men as criminals or incapable of learning with no regard for their mental, emotional, or spiritual well-being. Dr. Lamar's God ordained voice gives a voice to the voiceless. The ones who are many times pushed aside and left for dead. God said, " NO, I will send my son Lamar to stand as a beacon of hope. I will allow him to share his testimony for those who wouldn't otherwise be introduced to the topic of autism. Those who have sons who look like him. Husbands, uncles, cousins, & nephews, but don't have access." This book is beautifully written with detail, examples, and structure. The fact this man is God-led is the key thing that stood out throughout the book. You can surely feel the Holy Spirit all through the book. I highly recommend this book!

I've read one other book by a person diagnosed on the autism spectrum and this book certainly gives me more insight. Lamar writes candidly about his early experiences of feeling weird and different and in his own world. Getting a diagnosis in his mid-30s was a welcome relief for him. Since then he's seemed to learn much about autism and is able to educate and demystify the stigma associated with a developmental disability.

I found this book very encouraging to see how the author was able to leverage his autism for ministry. As a parent of a child with Autism and a member of a faith community, Dr. Hardwick's book for me is an uplifting and inspirationally transparent compilation of his life story, along with Autism education, and spiritual "self-help" for those affected by Autism. Dr Hardwick's story of being strong even when discovering challenges that others may consider weaknesses is inspiring! God's grace upon grace has been evident as he discovered invisible challenges that eventually helped him discover a theology of thorns that now encourages so many people.
