To my surprise, the camera is actually very good quality, even if its only 640x480.
The camera shows up as a webcam, so you can plug it into just about any computer. On Mac OSX, I was able to use it in Photobooth (great for video and pictures) as well as FaceTime. My daughter was able to make a FaceTime call showing video from the microscope, which was very impressive.
The optics and construction are high quality. I think a lot of users looking for an inexpensive but not cheap feeling microscope will be happy with this.
While it has a lot of features, the manual is absolutely useless. It does not tell you how any part of the microscope works. For example, turning to maximum magnification rendered the image so dark, I could not see it. It took me 20 minutes to realize an unlabeled dial on the microscope controlled the light intensity. After that, I could see fine. There is also an iris selection labeled 1-9 (no idea what this does), and a focus knob which is obvious. There is no fine focus, so you will have to be very careful when focusing at high magnifications. It is not impossible though.
Some cons of this microscope: easy to hit the max magnification lens on the slide if you are focused in past a certain point, easy to hit the lens on the slide if you are past the focus point, and strange camera flicker under certain lighting conditions (it can be mitigated by changing the light intensity slightly). I do not regret this purchase.
I can clearly see the hemocytometer squares at 40x, and then I digitally zoom with the imager to get higher magnifications to do the actual counting. One tip--instead of buying the more expensive model with the mechanical stage (little screw-driven apparatus to precisely move the sample a measured amount), I bought this model, and bought the mechanical stage accessory directly from Amcope's website. The microscope optics and imager do exactly what I want. Would highly recommend to any homebrewers for the purposes of yeast cell counting.
