Product Description

AmScope T490B 40X-2000X Professional Trinocular Lab Education Biological Compound Microscope with 3D Two-Layer Mechanical Stage

From Manufacture:

AmScopeT490B features a unique simul-focal optical system with an adjustable trinocular port to enable well-focused clear images on your computer or video screen while simultaneously obtaining sharp, focused images through the eyepieces. In addition, the T490B's industry standard 23mm photo port can be converted into a C-Mount port by attaching the included C-mount adapter, allowing you to attach most microscope digital cameras and video systems on the market. The T490B includes a 30-degree inclined 360-degree swiveling trinocular Siedentopf head, a 3-D mechanical stage, and an intensity-variable halogen illumination system. This versatile microscope is also capable of being upgraded with various accessories and attachments listed in the optional section for additional functions. It is a perfect laboratory instrument for clinics, Vets, Doctors, and professional students. It arrives brand new in a factory sealed box.

Simul-focal Optical System

Most trinocular microscopes allow you to view either through the trinocular port or the eyepieces only, forcing you to switch between the two. Since these trinocular ports are not simul-focal with the rest of the microscope optical system, you have to re-focus the microscope after each switch. The T490B, however, erases this step by providing simul-focal viewing. Especially handy for teaching demonstrations, clinical examinations and laboratory applications, the simul-focal feature allows your students or colleagues to view clear images simultaneously while you work through the eyepieces.

About Microscopes

Microscopes are instruments used to enhance the resolution of an object or image. Types include compound, stereo, or digital. Compound microscopes use a compound optical system with an objective lens and an eyepiece. Stereo microscopes show object depth in a three-dimensional image. Digital microscopes are used to display an image on a monitor, rather than looking through a lens. Microscopes can have monocular (one), binocular (two), or trinocular (three) eyepieces, with varying magnification abilities. Magnification ability refers to the size of an image. Resolution, also known as resolvant power, refers to the clarity of the image. The interaction between field of view (FOV), numerical aperture (NA), and working distance (WD) determines resolution. Microscopes can control magnification through a fixed focus, or through a range of adjustments. They can also utilize LED, fluorescent, and mirror light sources to help control viewing capabilities. Microscopes are widely used in education, lab research, biology, metallurgy, engineering, chemistry, manufacturing, and in the medical, forensic science, and veterinary industries. AmScope has been manufacturing microscopy equipment and accessories since 1996, headquartering in Irvine, CA.

For a sub-$300 microscope, this is a very good value. But compared to Nikon or Olympus professional models that cost 10 times more, it would be an unfair comparison. Simply put, optical and mechanical quality and performance fall well short of professional models. For students and hobbyists, this is more than adequate.

I also bought the Phase Contrast Kit (Model PCT) directly from Amscope for $684. When I was purchasing it, I thought it was a bit strange that Amscope priced the contrast kit so high since the microscopes it was designed to be used with cost only a fraction. I thought maybe the quality of the contrast kit might be high. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. It was not really useable so I ended up returning it.

The reason why I mention the Phase Contrast kit is this. For anyone considering buying anything from Amscope, buy from Amazon if you can. Returning anything to Amazon is exceptionally easy. That's not the case if you buy directly from Amscope. I had to call 3 times to get an RMA number, then call 3 times to get a refund processed. They eventually refunded the full price less shipping cost but it took too much effort to make that happen. Their technical support is non-existent.

The only difference between men and boys is the price of their toys.
In terms of bang for the buck, this may be the best techie man toy ever.

PROS

Impressive presentation. It's huge, at 14-1/2 inches tall without a camera and almost 20 inches tall with a compact digital camera on the trinocular port. It would be a little taller with an SLR/DSLR camera.

Well constructed with a really solid feel to the whole thing. Knobs that move, such as the focusing knobs, the condenser positioning knob, and the stage positioning knobs, all move smoothly.

The optics are quite good. Achromatic (and not planar), obviously, at this price point. But certainly good enough for students and hobbyists like me.

This is no toy in the cheap sense of the word. This is a serious instrument.

Overall, a great value at the $380 I paid the T490B-DK kit. (Which is this T490B microscope bundled with its optional DK-DRY100 darkfield condenser). I recommend you save yourself $90 by buying the T490B without the darkfield condenser. You can add the condenser at any time.

EDUCATION

Ideal for homeschooling.

As an 8-10 year old child circa 1950, I was given a cheap chemistry set and a toy microscope. I was never able to do anything with the chemistry set and the microscope was a useless piece of junk. Great idea. Encourage your kids to develop an interest in science by giving them scientific toys that do nothing but frustrate them.

If you're lucky enough to have a child who's interested in science, the smartest thing you can do for them would be to buy them this microscope and a few (2-4) boxes of prepared slides. The benefit is not just in the `discovery' value in getting really good views of really small things.

I am a student who purchased this microscope to learn more on my own instead of relying on school labs that are typically rushed, feeling like a factory assembly line with massive students in queue. I like to observe things at length without time constraints - that is part of my learning personality. This microscope is a beast! A solid piece of equipment! It feels exactly like a lab microscope. It arrived packaged with a few things like a plastic cover to store it from dust, adapter for monocular, and color filters. Everything feels solid from the focusing knob, fine-focus knob, to the articulating stage. I love that you can articulate the stereo eyepiece and that it is not fixed like some microscopes. I have read that the optical lenses are made by the same company that makes lenses for Leica, Olympus, and other brand names in the microscope arena. The build of this microscope and lens feel superb!

The ability to attach a video camera/camera via the monocular port is an awesome feature. Canon cameras can attach without the current adapter if you purchase a Canon specific adapter by Amscope, which cost around $90.

My major dislike is the lighting. It works ok, but I personally find it not bright enough. I also found that the higher resolution I want to go, the light becomes duller, though still functional. The lighting is classic halogen, not LED, but I knew that when purchasing. Only a month afterwards did I have an opportunity to use an LED microscope. Boy, that lighting will spoil you. The LED lighting is super bright, producing a pleasant viewing experience (makes for better microscope pictures too). The super power efficient LED lasts for a long time with no heat build-up like a halogen.

This is my first microscope. However, I'm an adult and a pretty devoted amateur mycologist. I cannot believe how beautiful the images are with this scope. Super easy to assemble. Solid, sturdy, you might even call it heavy. I can't think of a single nit except I wish the light was LED as the base does get rather warm. No matter, you can just use it to fix your specimens! The movement of the stage is so smooth. The trinocular head is fantastic. I am using the 20x eyepieces, so I put one of the 10x eyepieces into the trinocular (yes, it fits there perfectly), then put my iPhone on it and take some fairly amazing photos without any further attachments or cameras. I am blown away by the quality of this microscope. I expect to be happy with it for a long time. I can't imagine anyone regretting purchasing this. It takes a while to get the focusing down; really DO start at the lowest setting. Once you're pretty much dialed in you may not need to keep starting at the lowest if your specimens are fairly similar -- just fine-tune it.

I love this microscope so much I can barely tear myself away. This is no toy, but a high quality microscope priced within reach for anyone. And you may be seriously surprised at the quality of the photos you can get with your phone.
