This is the second of the Navy Seals of Valor Book series I've read by Sabrina Devonshire, and I am quickly beginning a big fan. I love stories filled with romance, with a thriller aspect, and which take me to faraway places. In AMALFI AFFAIR, Sabrina Devonshire brings it all to the table. I kept turning pages, faster and faster, eager to find out what happens to Olivia and Darryl—will they ever get back together again, or will the evil forces of the universe forever extinguish their love?
Here's a chance to put on a seat-belt and ride the perilous road of the Amalfi Coast, in more ways than one. This one's a great romantic tale and fantastic start to a series.
In addition to the intense sexual interludes found between the covers of this novel, Sabrina Devonshire also paints vivid scenic pictures. As I read the exhilarating biking, hiking and swimming scenes, I felt as though I was right there experiencing every thrill and sensation. The highly climatic ending left me breathless. There's no greater adrenaline rush than a man's heart-stopping race against time to save the woman he loves. This book would be a perfect beach read. It would make a perfect companion on a cold winter's night. Honestly, this book is just PERFECT!
The writing was choppy and subpar. The dialogue was the worst part, often unrealistic and wooden. For example, here's some of a conversation they had after having sex outdoors:
"I suppose I became a pessimist the day I lost my father," she said, frowning.
..."Oh, no, I'm so sorry, Olivia. Do you want to talk about it? I'm a good listener."
..."Sure. I haven't talked about it for a long time, but it feels right sharing it with you."
*long description of her father and how he died*
"In an instant, my father and hero was taken from me forever."
Darryl's eyes widened, looking sad and emphatic while his hands comforted her with a soothing gentle touch. "Oh, no, Olivia, I'm so sorry."
The characterization, especially for Olivia, wasn't believable. Olivia is supposed to be a top-notch CIA agent, but apparently she can't lie believably. She lies about being a branch manager for a bank (because she doesn't trust anyone), but when Darryl tries to ask her more about her job she gestures nervously and awkwardly tries to change the subject. She also can't keep a poker face when Darryl says things she finds hurtful. Some CIA agent. If you're expecting a strong, fierce, and awesome heroine, you'll be sorely disappointed. She starts off not believing in serious commitment to falling in love and wanting to start a relationship with a guy she's known two weeks and even cries about him leaving. Even worse, nine months later she's still not over him and she's pining so bad she can't do her job right. This might have been believable if there was a greater focus on their chemistry and their separation, but most of the novel is about their vacation and all the sex they had.
These two literally scorched my fingers as I flipped pages on my E-reader, but as with all good things, it must come to an end. With their break away from their jobs over, they part, but not without having left their mark on each other's minds and hearts.
Things pick up again nine months later when Olivia is kidnapped, and Darryl and his team are charged with her rescue.
Between the gorgeously depicted imagery to the connection between Olivia and Darryl, Amafli Affair completely satisfies every need you could possibly ask for in a romance book. Suspense, adrenaline fuelled action, romance, and panty dampening sex scenes, Devonshire has delivered an experience that has certainly left a smile on this satisfied readers face. I can't wait to see where she takes us for book 2!!
