In this book Amanda and her friends are still after the Moriarty clan, who has caused such havoc throughout the whole series. Purple rainbows are appearing everywhere and they seem to have something to do with gold coins. Pots of gold at the end of the rainbow? These rainbows start out beautiful but end up sinister and the colors at first are out of order. Later they become angry shades of purple. Zombies are seen but no one can get a photo of one or find out where it has gone. Students are disappearing from the school and everything is in upheaval. The school's antiquarian missing "Detective Bible" has not been found and the teachers have divided into two factions. Amanda and her friends are faced with many tasks, which include keeping the school together. Her new love for Scapulus Holmes has gone awry since everyone believes that she still carries a torch for Nick Moriarty. Does she? Even Amanda isn't sure. The story is packed with continuous action. I also find the names the author has given the characters a source of humor and wonder if she did so with tongue in cheek. (She also has an awesome imagination and a wonderful memory for details. You can bet that if an end isn't tied up in one book that it will continue until it's concluded.
I applaud Ms Berinstein for a wonderful series for middle grade children (grandmas love it too!). (less)
Paula Berinstein continues to delight readers by making Amanda Lester a flesh and blood character who often acts logically but sometimes, especially with matters of the heart, does not. She is as conflicted as any real teen girl and I love seeing her come to life on the page. While her issues may seem larger than life for most teens and pre-teens, any child who has changed schools, had parents divorce, or has moved states will understand the dizzying sensation of having one's life suddenly turned upside down, from a sense of relative order to absolute chaos.
Once again, everything that appears magical in the book from the purple rainbows to locks opened by scents instead of keys is actually based on real life technology. This speaks volumes for the amount of research Ms. Berinstein uses in crafting one of her tales.
Many young adult series peak with the first book and then go on a downward spiral in quality. The Amanda Lester series is unique in that every book gets better and better. The Purple Rainbow Puzzle is a riveting page turner sure to delight all readers of mysteries, suspense, young adult books, and even romance. I cannot recommend this book enough.
