This story is so alive and energetic. It moves. It develops. There's no need for distinction between a character-development-based novel and a plot-driven novel here. They happen simultaneously, just as they should. It's like someone blew the dust off the fantasy genre! Well done, Ms. Berry! Well done!

The story is a loose reinvention of Cinderella, but when I have kids and read a Cinderella version to them, it will be this one, not the classic! The heroin is not a superhero, not a fragile little flower, not an angel. She forgets her name for a moment when she meets a handsome man... even though half the city is pining for him and it might be quite shallow of her. She flirts a little, steals a little, helps a person and then leaves him in trouble. She makes friends with just the right type of bad witch. She has the grace to blush and feel guilty when she does something wrong. She feels sorry for herself, but knows when enough is enough. She doesn't expect to be rescued. She doesn't always even recognize a rescue when it comes! She misses home and her simply, happy childhood. She's a human person Living a Life with capital letters. And those others who share the pages with her are just like that, too.

Lucinda has a happy childhood in a well to do family until a tragic accident takes the lives of her parents. When their finances unravel, she ends up living with her aunt and uncle in their jewelry shop. While her uncle loves her, her aunt treats her poorly and uses her as a servant. Lucinda's life begins to change when a strange woman brings an unusual jewel to the shop for repair of the setting and Lucinda also sees the prince as he visits their store looking for an engagement gift. When the woman is identified as the Amaranth Witch, her aunt insists the jewel be returned. Life then gets complicated for Lucinda when she makes the fateful decision to keep the jewel and have her uncle reset it in secret. A visit from a young thief and the death of her uncle set off a chain of events that lead Lucinda to be homeless. She finds a companion in a goat and makes her way to the Amaranth Witch who offers her a return to her former home in exchange for finding the missing jewel. With a possibly magic goat as a companion, this take on the Cinderella story has some interesting twists and turns and was an unusual but pleasant adaptation of the old tale, complete with royalty, hidden identities, tragic pasts, and of course, and evil villain.

This book was appealing because it promised an unsual spin on Cinderella. And it was, some parts were brilliant, the prince was great handsome, sauve, but still quirky enough to be a believable person. Lucinda was strong and also great. But there were so many odd things that were thrown in that it the story became painful. I wanted to yell "But wait, the story was so goooood!" But appearently the author wanted to take "original" to the next level. The fairy godmother was from another planet......... I am serious. WHY!!!
Everything was so promising, even the goat that some other reviewers claimed random was precious, but the "fairy" was just to much. I understand that the author wanted to create an evil villian, but aliens were not neccesary. Just say they were from fairy land and I would of been happy. But including a different planet made it so akward, I wish I could of been the editor and said "Love everything about it, but we cut out the alien jab. They'll just be from fairyland or something".
The story is still good though, so don't be afraid to read it, it was still enjoyable........ But another planet! Seriously! Gurrrrr

he Amaranth Enchantment is a breathtakingly-fairytalesque story that I gobbled up in under 24 hours. Julie Berry's debut novel caught my attention while browsing with its understated cover and Victorian looking girl.

The inside flap sounded like my kinda book a dash of love story, a generous scoop of fairy-tale, sprinkling of magic, and a stronger than she realizes heroine.

Lucinda does not disappoint as she muddles through, rising to meet every adventure and misadventure.

The supporting cast are well-rounded with the mysterious possible witch (Beryl), the pickpocket with a devilishly disarming personality (Peter), the cruel step-aunt, and the playful dreamer with a good heart prince (Gregor). And of course there is Dog, the goat that becomes Lucinda's stanchest ally.

The plot is well crafted and I found the ending surprising. Everything tied together tightly and I had the oh-so-that's-what-that-meant moment.
The pacing is good with each chapter starting and ending with a hook that carries you through it and into the next chapter. I found myself reading until the wee hours last night.

This book is meant to be read a bit slower and savored. But the story moves at a nice pace.

The story was about friendship, family, fighting for yourself and those you love. And yes, there's a cute prince but we aren't forced to swoon over him for hundreds of pages.

Once you start reading this book you can easily get absorbed from the beginning, it has a little bit of mystery, magic, suspense, and romance. It's a time period story and the way the author describes the scenery, and clothes, makes it very easy for the reader to visualize it all in your head. When I finished the story it left me wanting more and too bad there's not a second part to the story.
