A good book is one that makes me want to keep coming back. Once I started this book, I had to keep coming back until I finished it. I read it during a pretty busy week and I found myself getting annoyed with conflicts that cut into my reading time.
I read all three books at once. I think this is the best way to do it because it helps to create consistency and there was no lag time between stories. The female lead, Kaylan, is strong and must struggle with deep betrayal from her sister while also dealing with the pain caused by her lover. The plot is face-paced and keeps the story moving forward. The characters are well developed and feel like real people instead of one-dimensional. This was a good book to read for a quick mental vacation. I really enjoyed it.
There is a nice mystery element to this story as well. Where are the Amaranthine chronicles? I think that the Author does a good job with the past to present time transitions. I especially enjoyed where the main protagonists are brought back to the past by magical means in an effort to find out where the book is. Freya’s character is growing more heinous with every passing chapter. The action is great with the addition of more shape-shifters and the fight scenes are entertaining.
Overall I found that there were several aspects to this series that I enjoyed and some that I was meh about. What would have really hit the mark for me was being able to develop an emotional connection to the characters, more detailed world building, and a better understanding of the magical part of this world. A very entertaining read from start to finish though and definitely worth checking out.
Betrayed by Blood, the first book in the trilogy, begins with Kaylan Avillan's fiance being killed in a magical blast. The key players are introduced all at once. Woven through a series of telling dialogue the reader learns who these protagonists are. It reads as smart and creative. Tiffany Shand does an admirable job keeping each character distinct and interesting which adds a deeper layer to the story. Each of whom also possess some form of magic that can protect them. But this is where the trilogy differs from high fantasy. There are characters of technical aptitude as well. For instance the ability to pick a lock with a bobby pin or hack into a computer system. It's cute nods like, this to our world, where you remember that this could all be going on all around us. You get the feeling that this world exists for the author, she has been immersed in it. I just want more.
It is full of exciting action sequences that are choreographed well, and I of course I imagine it as a CW show so it's great. Picture a crime solving gang made up of four, thirty somethings with an older boss/mentor figure who has known them since they were kids. They battle supernatural forces without getting any glory but they don't complain. They're a tight-knit crew that are unstoppable when they're together. Doesn't that sound like something that could be blaring on your TV at say 8PM, Thursday nights? (AWESOME, right?)
This trilogy kept me on the edge of my seat and I found myself reading it long after I had decided to go to bed. Get the box set because you'll read all three in one sitting. Definitely a binge-read.
Did I mention it's chalked full of suspenseful moments? All in all in it was exciting to read and I greatly enjoyed it. There's no pesky description overload, enabling the reader to enlist their imaginations and keeps the story moving right along.
The Amaranthine Chronicles is a 3-part urban fantasy trilogy compiled into a complete box set. Books one and two end with cliffhangers so it was nice to have the whole series at my fingertips. The series is engaging from the start. Full of action and mystery, the reader will become fully immersed in the world created by Tiffany Shand. The author does a fantastic job weaving the books full of twists and turns.
I enjoyed the characters and world building that takes place over the span of the three books. The interactions between Kaylan and Elijah are realistic as both friends, partners, and lovers. The magical abilities that each of the friends possess are unique and explained well. The author did a remarkable job writing a story filled with action, adventure, romance, suspense, treachery, and more.
I voluntarily reviewed an uncorrected ARC of The Amaranthine Chronicles.
