Very easy to follow instructions, good illustrations, took me literally 5 minutes or less to modify the flashlight. Of course, I didn't follow directions :) I skipped the conductive glue, twisted the wires and threw a piece of electrical tape on it. It took me longer to screw the lens cap back on than the rest of it since I didn't realize you have to line it up just right.
First day, my wife laughs at me. Doesn't believe it will work at all, "That's crazy".
Second day, she's pleasantly surprised it's still working.
Third day she asks me, slightly annoyed, "Are you really going to leave that there turned on for a couple months?" Yup :) But now it's in the garage...
Just a couple questions for the author:
Why that particular model flashlight?
What's the expected shelf life of a heavy duty 6v battery?
How badly did I screw it up by going with tape instead of glue?
** Update - it's been on for about 1030 hours now. It's gotten noticeably dimmer in the last week, but still bright enough to be useful IMO.
Short, sweet and to the point with Clear, concise instructions. And, infinitely readable. I was educated and entertained. It was worth every penny and then some.
I have plenty of tool experience, but NO electrical experience... you don't need either. I was like, "Wow. Cool. Darn it, what box did I pack the big flashlight in? (I'm moving in a few weeks) Never mind, I'll buy another. You can't have too many flashlights. Flashlights are like earrings that way... Crud. I packed my wire strippers."
Seriously readable, too. This is the first How-To book I have ever read cover to cover and wanted more. I stopped in the middle of writing this review to go buy Ron's book "Laterns, Lamps & Candles: A User's Guide."
I used an older Rayovac 6 volt lantern and a 6 volt LED bulb.
1 12 2014 Edit: A solid week now. More than 168 hours and no degradation in light output. Amazing!
This is with four D-Cells of the "copper top" variety.
2 6 2014 Edit: One month in now and still as bright as the first hour! What a deal!

The book was fun and I learned a few things, some practical some not. I'm not sure the efforts these projects require warrant the time and effort.Published 15 months ago by Found Soul
