I picked this up a few days ago, but held off writing a review to let it run a while. Long enough to kill a couple batteries without the modification. I'm impressed.

Very easy to follow instructions, good illustrations, took me literally 5 minutes or less to modify the flashlight. Of course, I didn't follow directions :) I skipped the conductive glue, twisted the wires and threw a piece of electrical tape on it. It took me longer to screw the lens cap back on than the rest of it since I didn't realize you have to line it up just right.

First day, my wife laughs at me. Doesn't believe it will work at all, "That's crazy".
Second day, she's pleasantly surprised it's still working.
Third day she asks me, slightly annoyed, "Are you really going to leave that there turned on for a couple months?" Yup :) But now it's in the garage...

Just a couple questions for the author:

Why that particular model flashlight?

What's the expected shelf life of a heavy duty 6v battery?

How badly did I screw it up by going with tape instead of glue?

** Update - it's been on for about 1030 hours now. It's gotten noticeably dimmer in the last week, but still bright enough to be useful IMO.

A lot of research went into this, and it seems to be completely legit (although I was quite skeptical at first). But the directions lack clarity at the most important point, and the step where you add a resistor to your flashlight is not well documented or well photographed. I'm being generous with the fourth star—it should probably get 3 or 3.5—but if this problem were corrected I'd gladly give it five stars.

To Ron Brown: Thank you.

Short, sweet and to the point with Clear, concise instructions. And, infinitely readable. I was educated and entertained. It was worth every penny and then some.

I have plenty of tool experience, but NO electrical experience... you don't need either. I was like, "Wow. Cool. Darn it, what box did I pack the big flashlight in? (I'm moving in a few weeks) Never mind, I'll buy another. You can't have too many flashlights. Flashlights are like earrings that way... Crud. I packed my wire strippers."

Seriously readable, too. This is the first How-To book I have ever read cover to cover and wanted more. I stopped in the middle of writing this review to go buy Ron's book "Laterns, Lamps & Candles: A User's Guide."

Relatively inexpensive...but interesting ideas. I bought the suggested resistors on Ebxx, and a light with the LED's from Wally-world. I now have a relatively decent light that should last for literally DAYS, and the lantern battery is pretty good on storage times. The light produced is sufficient for general to see at night, and will light up a room sufficiently...no spotlight, but that's not the intended purpose. Altogether, it cost maybe $12, and it's a good addition to an emergency kit.

This is a short book on how to lengthen you flashlight's life. It's easy to understand, and certainly easy to do. I live in a northern latitude where our winter nights are long. I use a rechargeable flashlight, to walk my dog in the morning and night. You have no idea how many times I've was halfway my walk when the rechargeable flashlight died on me. So I'm hoping that this 2000 hour flashlight will do the trick. On another note, I always love to learn new tricks and DIY stuff.

Very good book! If you have a soldering iron and a steady hand you can just solder the resistor in. Took me about 10 minutes most of that time spent waiting for the iron to heat. Put it all back together. Really stupid easy. Pushed the switch and voila! Some dim light. Enough light though to light up a very dark room. If the story is true, that dark room will be lit for 83 days!

I used an older Rayovac 6 volt lantern and a 6 volt LED bulb.

2000 hours....

1 12 2014 Edit: A solid week now. More than 168 hours and no degradation in light output. Amazing!

This is with four D-Cells of the "copper top" variety.

2 6 2014 Edit: One month in now and still as bright as the first hour! What a deal!
