Contrary to popular belief, the earth is not flat. Therefore it stands to reason that a geography book should pop up, spin, and reveal the world's secrets in all its three-dimensional glory. This truly Amazing Pop-Up book, virtually exploding with action and visual stimulation, is divided into eight main categories: "Our Place in Space," "Sunshine," "Continents and Oceans," "Rivers and Mountains," "Countries," "Disaster!," "Journey Time," and "Who Lives Here?" Each page is jam-packed with flaps to lift, wheels to dial, tabs to pull, and exciting pop-ups. There's even an expandable globe hanging on an elastic string, so readers can take a closer look at Earth as they learn more about its components. Scientific, political, and geographical information is presented in an easy-to-absorb, lighthearted way, so even the reluctant geographer will have no problem mastering the basics and much more. Silly characters named Sonny Sun, Eartha Earth, the Quizmaster (a walrus in a top hat), Disastrous Dan, Julian Journey, and Otis Ocean guide readers through the pages, and encourage everyone to take good care of the world. This lively book is a terrific companion to Kate Petty and Jennie Maizels's other Amazing Pop-Up books: The Amazing Pop-Up Multiplication Book, The Amazing Pop-Up Grammar Book, and The Amazing Pop-Up Music Book. Death-defying paper mechanics and truly fascinating information about the universe ensure a happy surprise for children who've wondered if there isn't anything more to geography. I plan to buy a less 'busy', more basic atlas for the USA. But this one is great for an overview of the world.
It's more than a pop up book as it contains tons of movable pieces such as flaps that open up containing fun facts and neat pictures, which my daughter LOVES!!
I love that this book includes the solar system!! It shows how the planets revolve around the sun and says how big each planet is, how long it would take to get to each planet from Earth, miles rom the sun and such. My child is too young to understand the information about the miles and the size of each planet. But she did like seeing where the planets were in conjunction with the sun and LOVED knowing that there are planets that have more than one more. She had a great time imaging what it would look like it Earth had over 27 moons.
So, yes, some of it is a little advance for kindergarteners but I am glad that I bought it and it will be a great reference when she gets older.
This is a great book for anyone over 8, including adults!!!
5 Stars (easily). Enjoy -- and don't be afraid to admit that you actually did!!!
