It’s a good book, but...

It’s a good book, but...
This was the first of a few books I got for my nieces, so they can better understand their autistic brother. I like how at the start of the book, we see how Julia and Elmo both like to play with their toys (also showing there is no right or wrong way to play). Then Abby comes along in the story, and is introduced to Julia. Now Abby was told early on that Julia is Autistic, and she’s quick to accept that, which even now is rare in real life. Now all that said, I do have a few issues: First, the person-first language (i.e. “muppet with autism”, “Julia has autism”), even though most autistic people prefer identity-first language (i.e. “autistic muppet”, “Julia is autistic”). PFL makes autism sound like an illness, when in reality, it is simply an atypical wiring of the human brain that can be disabling, which IFL acknowledges. Second, this story is never told from Julia’s POV. Only Elmo’s. Sure, most kids who read this book might not be autistic, but what about the ones who are? Wouldn’t it be better to write a story about autism from an autistic character’s point-of-view? I’m sure we’ll see another book about autism, from Julia’s perspective, somewhere down the line. But aside from that, this is a decent book!

This is another wonderful Sesame Street book on Autism. they are exceptional books on how to treat children who are a little different. They are all three about Julia, her family and Elmo.. It shows how others friends should treat her and how she can have friends. Julia's dad told Elmo that she does things a little differently because she has autism. He told him a few things to do if she stops talking or puts her hands over her ears. Julia's friendship is worth a few differences. Everyone has differences.
Julia and Elmo have played together since she was small. Elmo likes to build brick towers and Emily likes to build in rows. Elmo likes to play with cars and Julia likes to play with the wheels. They like to play a lot of things together.
I found this book on a website for free for an honest review.

“We’re Amazing 1, 2. 3” is about autism as well as another child who has sensitive hearing; she hears sounds others do not hear and loud sounds bother her. It is about the famous character Elmo and Julia who has the sensitive hearing and another little girl who is autistic. They get along very nicely. They play, sing, and snack together, 1, 2, 3 - amazing friends.

I’m doing research for a video essay, and decided to read this because it was part of said essay. As someone with autism, this is so amazing! I relate to everything Julia does and its presented in such a kind and kid-friendly way! Awesome work :D

I read this book to my children today. I pick a new book daily to read to them and discuss it afterwards. Today we found this book. I do not know much about autism personally but do think this is a good way to teach your children about people being different. Elmo is friends with Julia and she is different than most kids. There is another character introduced that wasn't familiar with Julia or the way she acts different. It seems pretty stereotypical of the way she covers her ears, gets nervous, has sensory issues, and a hard time in social environments etc. But like the author said at the beginning that all cases and kids are different. This book had good photos and good intentions on a basic lesson. I find it to be a good introduction for children into what autism is even tho every case is different. Even if this book didn't focus on autism it would teach the simple lesson that everyone is different but they can still be your friend.

I was honestly just looking into downloading a free children's book and my kid likes Elmo, so this seemed like a good deal. I was still pleasantly surprised by the content. I could tell by page three that the girl was autistic. My child has a half-sister the same age who is autistic, so this will be a helpful tool as they grow up. It's a great book for small children to learn how to accept and understand neurodivergent individuals, specifically autistic ones. We're all valuable members of society and it's good to learn that young.

I absolutely love this book. My 8 year old son has autism and it has been so self-affirming to him to see an autistic character on one of his favorite shows. He, and his 3 year old sister, both love the story and pictures. I'd recommend this book to every household with young kids, whether they have a kid with autism or not. The younger kids learn about autism, the less likely they are to think autistic kids are weird when they get to school.

I love this book and purchased it for my Autistic granddaughter. I was so impressed by the simple messages it provided that I purchased two more copies. I gave one to my granddaughter's daycare provider, who read it to all the children (and it truly seemed to help them relate our sweet girl better). The other one I purchased for a friend whose little daughter had been having play dates with my granddaughter since they were about 8 months old - I gave it to her because the relationship between Elmo and Julia in the book is much like the relationship between her daughter and my granddaughter.
