This was a definitive point in the history of Spiderman comics. This graphic novel collection shows the origin and story of Spiderman's alien costume (which later became Venom, Spidey's arch nemesis). For any big Spiderman fan this is a must read, including not only the truth about his suit, but also such story lines as the first appearence of The Rose, and Mary Jane's discovery of Spiderman's Secret Identity. Whether you've loved Spidey forever, or are a new fan, I highly suggest you pick up this book!

A iconic story in Spider-man history. This book maintains the original coloring of the issues which is great for a purest, but there were definitely limitations to coloring in 80's comic books. If you're interested in reading this story I would actually suggest 'Spider-Man: Birth of Venom' which includes most everything in this volume, but goes on to include the additional confrontations.

The superheroes return to Earth safely after defeating Doctor Doom on Battleworld which was created by the Beyonder. Spider-Man immediately returns to the life he left behind, and soon engages in battle with a new gangster by the name of Rose. This forces Rose to make a move against Spider-Man. In addition to this, Spider-Man's relationship with the Black Cat is taking a turn, he still believes the Hobgoblin is at large, and the costume he brought back with him from the Beyonder's world is constantly surprising him with its creepy abilities. -summary

In the aftermath of the Secret Wars a handful of characters returned home somehow changed. Either alliances were switched, break ups occurred, or mental blocks removed; but no one came out of this ordeal with more to worry about than Spider-Man. In fact, he received such a raw deal that the events would change his life forever. The Saga of the Alien Costume is an important chapter in the Spider-Man mythos, and is also regarded as a Marvel Milestone. For many people I know, it ranks somewhere at the top amongst the Death of Gwen Stacy and Spider-Man's Origin. Originally written by Tom DeFalco and Roger Stern, this trade paperback collects The Amazing Spider-Man issues 252 - 259.

Once the story gets past the slow start and filler moments, it begins to find some footing and juggle various sub plots, which are either tied up by the end of this book or continue later on to spawn new feuds. Spider-Man comes to blows with the Rose when he interferes in his criminal operations. This forces Rose to hire Puma, a formidable assassin with incredible tracking abilities who's powers have a mystical origin. He's able to track Spider-Man throughout the city, and during this battle Spider-Man learns more about his costume.

Format: Paperback
"The Amazing Spider-Man: The Saga of the Alien Costume" collects issues 252 through 259 of "The Amazing Spider-Man", picking up after the events of "The Secret Wars" in which Spider-Man received the black costume and concluding with him re-donning the classic red and blue duds. It's a pity that Marvel does not include the "Secret Wars" story that featured the first appearance of the black costume as well as the "Spectacular Spider-Man" issues that were on the stands at the same time as these "Amazing Spider-Man" issues, but Marvel's editorial notes in the margins make it easy enough to track down the issues and stories necessary to fill in the gaps. While the over-arcing story deals with the alien costume, there are also appearances from the Rose, the Puma, Hobgoblin, Black Cat, and Mary Jane's revelation that she knows Peter Parker is Spider-Man, along with MJ's backstory. It's a nice volume of classic stories about the Webhead and, coupled with the "Birth of Venom" book Marvel released in 2007, works as a good introduction to Venom for new readers.
