I should point out specifically for this book that is does contain the same story in " The Amazing Spider-Man: An Origin Story ," which we purchased before getting this book. This book adds substantially more Spider Man stories, covering most of the major villains you'd expect to see. The stories are simple enough for a pre-schooler to understand, and they are all a pretty good length for a bedtime story. The stories do also try to impart some lessons similar to those seen in the comics, and since this is Spider-Man, "With great power comes great responsibility" is front and center.
The book itself is similar to the other Disney story collections. High quality binding and nicely constructed. It should hold up for years, provided you don't give the littlest ones an opportunity to rip pages.
Overall, you can't go wrong with this collection for the young super hero or Spider-Man fan, though the minimum age is probably about 3. This book could have value into early elementary school, too, for those learning how to read on their own.
It's a collection of 20 stories that cover Spidey's origins and a ton of villains, all in a kid friendly way. The stories are long enough and have enough plot to keep him engaged, but not so convoluted that a young reader can't follow. The origins of the villains have been simplified a bit, to cater to the early reader audience without bogging down in the expansive history that years of comics has created. Certainly the simplification won't appeal to die hard fans but this is a kid's story book and meant to just introduce the characters and world.
The artwork is great, clean and clear and really adds to the story without cluttering the pages. An example is a nice series of images at the bottom of one of the pages depicting Doc Connor's transformation to the lizard. The six overlapping images show him drinking the formula, regrowing his arm, realizing it's starting to turn green, realizing he's transforming, and finally the full Lizard.
I saved this book for a rainy day and pulled it out as a surprise. My son enjoys reading but never on this level. He is devouring this book, demanding to hear another story as soon as one we're reading is done. Over the course of two days we've nearly completed the book (with many repetitions of previous stories as well.) I can't say how happy I am with this purchase.
It has a good mix of traditional "superhero vs supervillain" stories (most of the chapters) as well as two origin stories along with "a week in the life of Peter Parker" and "everyday superheros". We have been reading several chapters per day for a few weeks now; my daughter and son still love them.
It's quite a lot better than "Super Friends: Flying High (DC Super Friends)" with its giant-footed bubble-shaped artwork. But the comparison isn't quite fair. This Spider-Man book has 10 as many pages (32 vs over 300) and probably 50 times as many words, so they fill different roles in your library. My kids like the shorter comic books pretty well also. But they greatly prefer Spider-Man.
I was tempted to give it 5 stars, but I can't quite bring myself to give 5 stars to a book that ships with typos. There are two or three sentences where a word is missing or repeated. This is annoying in an adult novel, but it's really not acceptable in a book for kids learning to read. It's certainly a good comic book though, and I'll be happy to bump my review up to 5 stars if the next edition fixes these mistakes.

He loves the stories and it's helped to keep him focused and still. It's going so well we're going to need a new book soon
