Pros: Decent graphics, entertaining, lightweight game. Can challenge those who wish to be challenged
Cons: Fairly hard to master at the higher levels, some people might find the game repetitive.
In-depth Review:
The format of Big Kahuna is a tried and true one in the shadow of former greats such as Bejeweled. Line up tiles in a vertical or horizontal configuration to clear levels. Enjoy the pretty reef background, animated marine life, interesting sound effects, and special tile pieces which throw a wrench in your mouse clicking frenzy to finish before the timer is up.
System Requirement: Windows XP / Vista with very modest hardware requirements. Offering a Mac version would have been nice.
Audience: The standard play mode has 100 basic levels, although the game isn't quite finished once you've cleared those. This mode has a timer per level and it is fairly difficult to clear them in time once you are past level 50. The game also has a relaxed mode sans timer, so this game will appeal to both the hardcore and casual.
Graphics: Fairly good. The game seems to have a native 640x480 resolution and will be fairly small on your screen if you have your computer hooked up to a HD-type screen (1920x1080). It is preferable to play it in window mode over fullscren, as the graphics look quite blocky blown up.
Playtime: If you are one of those people who played Tetris hours on end, this game will keep you entertained for quite some time. There are certain strategies in clearing boards which you will pick up on. However, the ability to clear a board within the timer and being able to look-ahead before moving pieces around is somewhat critical for the levels near the end and so will require some practice and gaming skills to master. I suspect some people will be quickly bored of this game as well.
Price: Amazon is currently offering it for $0. They're practically giving it away, at that price.
The screensaver is a nice addition - and adds incentive for playing the game. Your screensaver aquarium features all of the fish you've unlocked in the game, so you have to reach those higher levels to add those hard-to-get, special fish to your little virtual underwater menagerie. In all honesty, I would not have downloaded this game had it not been free at the time - but I definitely found this to be quite enjoyable and somewhat addictive.
I like the option to have ocean waves rather than music while playing. The in-game help is just right - exactly enough to tell you how to play the game without nagging. The 'relaxed' play mode is quite nice - time still counts, but you don't have to race against a clock. One feature I don't like is the hints - the game will suggest matches for you, and I'd rather figure them out for myself.
No virus report from AVG here. If you're only getting the 30-minute demo (as of today, the game is still free), you're doing something wrong - trust me. I've played all 100 levels (and I'm halfway through the bonus 50 levels), and it's taken much more than 30 minutes to do it. (It's a good thing I don't have a spouse or children to neglect, but the cats have taken to sitting in front of the computer screen.)
Game play was easy to learn and rewarding with fish popping out as you break boxes and move thru the puzzle. Can get challenging when you near the end of the puzzle trying to break the last few boxes. Skelton fish on certain maps add additional challenges. There are 100 puzzles with 50 puzzle bonus pack.
Music can get get repetitive, so I swithed it to waves.
Aquarium screen saver is very nice and you can pick the type and amount of fish you want as differnt species are unlocked when you complete levels.
Of course it has been tough to play as my wife has taken over the Laptop and played the weekend non-stop.
Side note: It appears the only AV software out there picking up this "trojan" is AVG. IMHO, this is a false positive, but it is your computer so please do what you think is best.
