About the Author
At Hooked on Phonics, operated by Smarterville Productions LLC, we believe that every child loves to learn, so we focus on nurturing that thirst for knowledge with products that are fun, effective, and easy to use. We respond to the natural curiosity of a child and support families and teachers as they help children improve reading, math, and study skills. We celebrate every success so learning becomes a positive cycle that kids will love to repeat again and again. We meet all children at their level, engage their imaginations, and help them climb to the next level step by step. Every achievement ends in a celebration of success, an elevation of confidence, and an increase in self-esteem. As children master reading and math skills, they also lay the foundation for a lifetime of learning. Our goal is to make a difference in the lives of children by making learning fun and easy. That is why we have brought together a dedicated team of parents, leading educators, interactive designers, writers, and artists. By collaboration, research, and testing, we continually develop innovative products and systems that teach children not only to learn but also to love learning.

The kit comes with level one and level two boxes. In each separate box are three small booklets letting the kids try their hand at reading stories. These are more wordy then you would consider for the beginning reader. My son usually begs me to just read to him instead of him having to try out the words. In all honesty it is pretty daunting for any kid. Next up would be the workbook that you follow everyday, each page has you practice a letter and do a few exercises to really bring the letter home to your child. There is a CD inside as well of some kid friendly ( think baby einsteins in my opinion) type teaching of the alphabet, sounding out each letter, and small words). Surprisingly though, it still has the power to hold my four year old's attention. Then lastly there are flash cards in each one. The level one box had uppercase letter cards that had pictures on it and the level two box has the lowercase letters on it.
The box arrived promptly within two days of ordering. So far, I have not utilized this as much as I think I could simply because without the CD it makes alot of the lessons useless. Hopefully when I can utilize it fully I will come back and update my review.
Do I recommend still? Yes, simply cause it is another endeavor that can help in teaching your child if you stick with it.
Is it an attention grabber for little ones? The bold red color is not only an attention grabber but bold enough to be considered exciting to the eye.
Are the CDs good? It somehow attracts my four year old's attention for the thirty minutes it runs. Then he asks for more.
I recommend pre-k through 2nd grade HOP. This program works and I like how they use multiple platforms (lesson on work book, books, DVD, and games online) to engage kids.
Here is a video of her doing part of the lesson from the DVD:
down side is you're not getting that much more with the amazon package and yet it takes a month just to ship! Next time I will just get the generic phonics version not the amazon exclusive. not worth the wait.
