Unwieldy controls and same-sy gameplay

I play a lot of video games. I made it about an hour through this one before the controls made me quit.

I'm playing the game on a Fire Phone. As you tilt the phone, the in-game camera rotates to make it seem like you're looking around. The problem for me was that the game seemed to think I was looking from an angle all the time. If I tapped on a spot in the room, I'd move to the left of that spot because the phone thought my head was off to the left. Even if this is a problem with the phone, the game should be better about handling this case so that I actually move to the spot I tap on.

As for the gameplay, I thought it was boring, but perhaps that's because I've played many other games like it that were better. There are influences from Bioshock, Amnesia, Silent Hill, and maybe even Metal Gear Solid, and those are just the games I've played.

You're in an asylum where everyone seems to have gone crazy, and you're picking up pieces of paper that tell the story of how the asylum was before you got there (if you've ever played Bioshock, you can already taste the similarity).

Eventually you come upon some monsters (inmates?) that you have to jump in a locker to hide from. The problem is that the monsters show their faces immediately (which aren't frightening) and demonstrate that they're incapable of opening the door of a locker, so they become not scary very fast. (Hiding from monsters in a locker? Sounds like when you meet Pyramid Head in Silent Hill 2.)

You can't kill the monsters (cough, Amnesia, cough) so you have to stealth all over the place a la Metal Gear Solid. But even if you mess up, you can just run and hide in the nearest locker, so it wasn't very stressful for me. Instead of just ambling around aimlessly, like you would expect monsters to do, they seem to walk in set paths. If you watch them for a while, you can learn their routines. All of these things made it feel like a game rather than an experience.

That's about as far as I could get. I would give it 1 star, but I feel bad doing that without actually finishing the game. Other reviews say the story gets good, so who knows? Maybe there actually is a reason for this game to exist.

So Far... So Good!

I just bought this game this morning before work and I've only had a short time to play it. I've completed 6% of the story so far and I will say that this game has a very creepy feel to it. As suggested by the game I'm playing it while wearing headphones, which really adds to the atmosphere of the game.

To play the game you tap on your screen where you want your character to move to. Everything is seen in a first person perspective and at first this seemed like a very difficult way to play the game however, it works very well. You use one finger to shift your view and look around the room/area you are in and you can tap to move to a different location in the room. Any objects that are usable are lit up so you can easily tell what you can and can't interact with. If you double tap to a location your character will run instead of walk.

I'm playing this game on my Amazon Fire Phone and for being on a small screen it works very well. I will update this review as I go along. I plan to test the following options in the near future and I will provide a final review once I complete the game.

Feature One: Dynamic Perspective (Amazons 3D effect on the Fire Phone)

I have tested this feature and I can see how this would be very helpful in several parts of the game. When you are trying to avoid inhabitants there is a tool you can use to see through walls to see where they are. You only get so many of them and they only work for a short time. With Dynamic Perspective you can peek around corners to get a better view of the area. Is it safe? Is there an inhabitant around the corner wanted to cut me into little pieces? Dynamic Perspective is a great way to help you find out.

Feature Two: Playing the game on my Fire HDX 8.9 (2014 Version)

I spent a great deal of time playing this game on my Fire HDX last night. Having the bigger screen was very nice and it really enhanced the atmosphere of the game. I expect that I will finish playing through the game on my Fire HDX though it's nice to know that with the cloud saving feature it's very easy for me to pick the game up on my Fire Phone when I'm on the go or when I need to use the Dynamic Perspective to look around some corners.

UPDATE: The storyline of the game is broken up into Episodes. You start with the Prelude and move into Episode 1. Each episode is broken into multiple chapters. So far I've gotten to Episode 2, Chapter 1 out of a total of 3 Episodes. Hoping to finish the game this weekend.

Maybe I didn't read the description well enough, but I half expected this to be a zombie hack and slash type of game and I wasn't sure whether I would like it. While there are some zombie-like creatures in the game you don't fight them--it's more about avoiding them to get to your destination. The game provides a number of tools to help disguise you, distract the creatures, etc. I'm about halfway through the game at this point and quite enjoying it. The one thing I didn't pick up on right away is that the toolbar in the lower left corner can be swiped to the side to reveal additional tools. Otherwise, the interface is done well without being cluttered and the game is very responsive to the controls.

It's pretty creepy--the setting, the creatures, the sound effects, etc. are all very well done in my opinion. There's an interesting storyline going on here and it feels like a puzzle trying to sort through it all. It's a shame the device compatibility is artificially restricted to Kindle devices. I downloaded it to my Kindle and then sideloaded it onto my Nexus 6 where I have been playing it without any issues. I imagine a lot more people would enjoy this game if it was made available to more devices. I tried sideloading it onto my FireTV, hoping to play on the big screen with a controller, but there is no controller support. The game seems to run fine, other than it can't be controlled there :)
