If you purchase ANY CUTTING BOARD MADE FROM NATURAL WOOD, .***Especially A High End very THICK block or board, the 1ST thing in BOLD TYPE is HOW TO FIRST TREAT YOUR CUTTING BOARD, the 2ND is WHAT TO NEVER DO TO YOUR CUTTIBG BOARD'. Natural wood, and Bamboo is actually a very expensive wood for cutting boards, BY it's very nature ABSORBS MOISTURE. Moisture from food, especially any meats fish poultry, and that includes fatty molecules that then spoil, rot, decay. They will infiltrate an entire board regardless of thickness, and foul odor, mold, blackening will follow and warping. If you clean your board before treating the DRY BOARD YOU WILL NEVER have a straight cutting board STOP! Although you can spend up to $40-$80 on board oil, + board wax sealer, I will tell you how to properly seal, saturate and thus protect your board for a long life for $5. As far as size, every product is described in detail, IDK why anyone can complain, or what 'normal size' means to anyone else, but the sizes of these boards are accurate to, 1, mincing or julien board, that then can have the food slid off into a pan, or misenpla bowl. That's why there's no handle hole. Boards 2/3 respectively are a med sized cuting, dicing, chopping board, and a lastly large trimming, carving,(steak/ fish/ pork/ chicken/, no not a 19lbs turkey! I included pics of all 3, pic # 2, shows the thickness with a 1/4 standing agains my it,( looks like a nickel it's a quarter). Be not afraid of thickness, do this and this HARD surface board will be fine.
So back to Cutting Boards 101( which 70% of people don't know till they spend 250$ on one), every board warps from liquid, water, or food discharge only the latter creates growing bacteria, that YOU CANNOT SCRUB OFF! So buy , as pictured in my photos 1, $3.99 bottle of Mineral Oil pictured below, in a drug stor or pharmacy you'll find a consumable food grade, that's fine. Poor oil onto cutting boards a tspn at a time, use a clean rag, sponge, PPTOWEL, shirt, to rub it in and RUB IT in for a good minute or two, keep a towel or paper towels under it, flip repeat, do the edges also!! Still visibility *** wet stand upright in dishdrainer and let dry absorb. It won't DRY, it's ok to wipe so it's maneable. Whatever oil is left after 2-3+ hrs, rub in and let stand, or USE. After 1 good treatment it can be used, but 2 full ones seasons the board. Always wipe clean, YES a treated board can be washed - ****not soaked , never ever in dishwasher, - washed then stand up let dry AFTER WIPING off excess water. Apply mineral oil 1 more time a few days later, and periodically as it gets dry, all long as needed. Hot low humidity will dry out any oiled board, maybe try carnuba wax instead.
As long as the board is moist with oil, no water can absorb, nor food, or blood, juice etc, and it will then NOT warp. Always store upright, or if YOU can't sleep unless it's laying flat, flip it every other day, both sides are equally useful for use, alternate,and treat regularly. These are high quality very good boards for a ridiculous price. Look around, a similar board offers the oil set for $68, for the $199, board, (d), here you get 3 boards,(s). And for $10, or so, you'll have an excellent Super high compression build, quality set of light, strong, bamboo is one of the strongest dry woods available, and timeworthy long lasting cutting board set. Note : fanatics, linseed oil will also waterproof ( as in repel) your board and is fine. Just be sure it's absorbed in, it's not healthy to consume but is a top choice treatment. Caranuba wax YES, ---Veg oil, corn oil, olive oil , NO NO NO, in fact you'll almost guarantee food contamination !!!! So as for leaving it in a water filled sink for a long weekend and being heartbroken upon return, A. All boards warp, I've got a 6" butcher board IT WARPS, B. Why would anyone think that is not destructive? C. As for the I tossed out the first 2, well I'm not sure what it is YOU ARE CUTTING UP, but asst., Sous chefs at Nobú, are trained to prepare delicacy prep on a board identical to #1, taking up as little space as poss., as well as there should be no ingredient meant for that mincing board, that would require a much larger size cooking for 3-4 people at once. No splintering or cracks. The smooth finish and no groves make it super easy to clean. I've been using them for about 3 months and they've gone through a ton of washing and still look brand new. I hand wash them only.
I kept forgetting when I was at the store, so I looked on Amazon and found this set of Bamboo boards. The 3 board set is less expensive than a small board at the local store, and I love bamboo. Resists cuts and cleans up fast and easy.
