I used the red AmazonBasics Packing Cubes for a recent trip to Paris and the airline left my checked bag in the rain — my bag was soaked through. When I opened it at the hotel I noticed that the red dye from the Packing Cube had bled onto my clothes (most visible on my white undershirts)! They were all ruined. There was no dye transfer on the black or gray bags.
Be wary if traveling to damp climates or those with high humidity, as the same may happen to you.
My photo will give you an idea of how big each cube is. I actually used the big cube for pants, the medium for shirts, the small for underwear, and the long for socks.
I wanted to get a more well-known brand, but decided to settle for Amazon Basics since they're a little cheaper. So far I'm really satisfied. I'll be using these for a couple more summer trips and will post an update if anything changes.
I'm amazed by how well these cubes held out to the abuse I dished out. I mean, it was military-grade. It would have killed a sea bag without a doubt. They stretched to accommodate everything I threw at them, and they never even gave me any difficulty zipping them up. No rips or tears in the mesh, even after suffering through a Great Pyrenees sleeping and walking on them. If you put anything other than a Grizzly inside of one of these, it'll probably stay put.
So there you have it. These things annoy the TSA, tolerate two tons of hairy and slobbery dog affection, will hold enough clothes to keep you smelling acceptable for over a week, and may serve as a bear trap in a pinch. I'm considering buying multiple sets, so I can use one cube to contain all the others, and while I won't suggest that you follow me that far down the rabbit hole, I will say that if you're thinking about picking up a set of these for yourself, you should go ahead and do it. I doubt you'll have any regrets.
WHAT THEY HOLD:
The thin one is perfect for my tank tops. I stack 7-10 tank tops in there if nicely folded. (It's a life-saver actually!)
The small hold 5 short sundresses.
The medium holds 6 pairs of shorts including 3 denim.
The large is too large for my taste so I don't use that one. I suppose I could use it for sweaters or for storage.
(I'm female 5'6 and 120lbs wearing a size small in tops and 4 in shorts.)
Completely ruined all my dress shirts (which I had to rebuy in Asia) and the worst, these packing cube ruined a bunch of my favorite collectors T-shirts (a bunch of them were from Roots of Fight, you can check how much a t-shirt from them costs usually, not to mention most of them were limited edition ones). I COMPLETELY REGRET GOING WITH AMAZON'S CHEAPO ALTERNATIVE, I think I will reconsider going with the AmazonBasics brand from now on!
