I used the red AmazonBasics Packing Cubes for a recent trip to Paris and the airline left my checked bag in the rain — my bag was soaked through. When I opened it at the hotel I noticed that the red dye from the Packing Cube had bled onto my clothes (most visible on my white undershirts)! They were all ruined. There was no dye transfer on the black or gray bags.
Be wary if traveling to damp climates or those with high humidity, as the same may happen to you.
I'm amazed by how well these cubes held out to the abuse I dished out. I mean, it was military-grade. It would have killed a sea bag without a doubt. They stretched to accommodate everything I threw at them, and they never even gave me any difficulty zipping them up. No rips or tears in the mesh, even after suffering through a Great Pyrenees sleeping and walking on them. If you put anything other than a Grizzly inside of one of these, it'll probably stay put.
So there you have it. These things annoy the TSA, tolerate two tons of hairy and slobbery dog affection, will hold enough clothes to keep you smelling acceptable for over a week, and may serve as a bear trap in a pinch. I'm considering buying multiple sets, so I can use one cube to contain all the others, and while I won't suggest that you follow me that far down the rabbit hole, I will say that if you're thinking about picking up a set of these for yourself, you should go ahead and do it. I doubt you'll have any regrets.
Completely ruined all my dress shirts (which I had to rebuy in Asia) and the worst, these packing cube ruined a bunch of my favorite collectors T-shirts (a bunch of them were from Roots of Fight, you can check how much a t-shirt from them costs usually, not to mention most of them were limited edition ones). I COMPLETELY REGRET GOING WITH AMAZON'S CHEAPO ALTERNATIVE, I think I will reconsider going with the AmazonBasics brand from now on!
I read a ton of reviews about these packing cubes and really wondered, “How will these help? I’ll just have to open and close a lot more zippers!”
I decided to order a red set of AmazonBasics Packing Cubes in small, medium, large, and slim. I also ordered a sky blue set of AmazonBasics Packing Cubes, all four in medium size.
Here’s what I learned. I am a last-minute packer and it’s really difficult for me to pack the night before with suitcases all over my side of the bed while my husband is trying to sleep. It’s no fun for him, either!
I discovered with these packing cubes, I could PRE-PACK without having suitcases taking up space in my room!
I flew to Utah with a friend last week and had a 5-day road trip along the Wasatch Front from Smithfield to Manti. We were visiting LDS temples and we stayed with three different relatives.
I used the large red cube to hold all my rolled-up clothing. I had one pair of pants, 2 pair of shorts, 2 long skirts, and about 7 shirts or tops. For one of the medium-sized ones I had all my underwear, including a half slip, and 6 pair of socks. I used another medium-sized one for my bag o’ medicine (I take a lot of supplements.)
The best discovery was for you LDS folks out there: I used another medium-sized cube as a temporary temple bag! It fit my dress, packet, shoes, stockings, a small hairbrush, and some gum and cough drops.
I can’t remember all the uses, but after we got to Utah, I put all my non-perishable snacks (bags of nuts, wheat thins, fig bars, granola bars, etc.) in the slim one and kept it within reach in the car for when we were hungry between meals. I also put a small packet of Wet Ones in there.
When we went to Manti, we used the couple extra empty cubes I brought along to hold our brushes, combs and makeup for sprucing up after doing baptisms.
When I turned in our rental car, it was closing time and our ride had not yet arrived, so I was left with all the luggage on the sidewalk. Knowing how I had packed with these wonderful cubes, I was not embarrassed at all to open my luggage and re-shuffle a couple of cubes from one suitcase to the other.
If you’re not sure, just give these a try. I really, really liked them and am sure I will find future uses for them, as well.
