I gave the cable 4 stars because I got exactly what I ordered and it does what it's supposed to, but I would not recommend this length to anyone unless they're specifically planning to plug it into an existing USB extension cable.
I had been looking at other products that are 3 feet in length and did not realize how short this is.
The distance from the middle of one plug to the middle of the other plug is barely 4 inches. You can barely plug this into a UBS slot and set the iPhone on your table or floor. The cable is VERY short. If you are thinking of buying this product, get out a ruler and measure 4 inches and consider whether you will use a cable this small.
This is product is as advertised. The total length is about 4 inches. I find it very difficult to use. I just ordered another product that is actually 3 FEET in length. Cheap manufacturer. How much does it cost to add a couple of inches of cable? This is just way too short.
I appreciate Amazon return policy. I should return this, but like I said my mistake. I do not recommend this cable.
Fast forward to present day and my wife uses 1 cable at home and the other at work. Anyone who owns a cell phone knows that the more cables the better. So many times when we would make road trips or go out for the day, sometimes she would forget her cable at home or her phone would start to die in the middle of the day after constant use. So that's when she told me she needed one for the car charger.
Despite the $2 price drop on the official Apple cable, I decided to look at alternatives since the iPhone has officially been out for a year now. While I was reading reviews on 3rd party cables, I saw someone mention that the AmazonBasics cables Lightning Cable worked great. I previously purchased an AmazonBasics cable in the past (AmazonBasics Digital Optical Audio Toslink Cable, 6 Feet) and was 100% satisfied with not only with the function, but the quality as well.
I found the AmazonBasics Lightning Cable, but only saw two sizes (3 inch and 4 inch). I bought the 4 inch and have no regrets. The connector perfectly fits my wife's iPhone 5 and she has no issues charging with it. She mainly uses it in her car.
If one would complain about this cable, I would think one would complain about the length. Personally it's not an issue for me or my wife but 4 inches is not very long for someone who constantly needs to look at the phone while it's charging. Otherwise it's perfect for charging. Give this item 5 stars.
The cable itself is well made, and seems to hold up to pulling and twisting much better than the OEM Apple cable. I only wish that they made the cable in 6" length so that I can use it in my car too, instead of having a long white cable dangling everywhere in the center console.
Some people are having issues with the Lightning end of this cable being too thick for their iPhone case; the base of the Lightning end is slightly thicker compared to the OEM Apple cable, but it's also beefier and less likely to fray like I've seen many OEM Apple cables do. Besides, this cable works just fine with the case I'm using =)
Anyhow, if you're looking for a good, reliable cable at a nice price, this is it. If you have a thick case with little clearance for anything thicker than the OEM Apple cable, then sorry but you'll have to spend more for the OEM Apple cable.
I would love to upload a video but I can't so I'll try describing the procedure as best as I can with words. A little warning though, once done, you can't return it back to amazon. So here goes, 1st is that you will see that the lightning cable end is plastic and there is a split line that you can separate with the use of a knife. You could even use your nails if you want. Once that is done, you will realize that it is just an encapsulating plastic that does not really connect with the cable itself. I threw it away and it finally fits thru my case. I then used a heat shrink tubing just barely enough to cover the exposed metal part. That takes care of the cosmetics. Hope this helped.
