Exceptional antenna for a low price!

Exceptional antenna for a low price!
I purchased the Amazon Basics antenna as a replacement to a Mohu Leaf Metro which worked well for several months until it stopped working. I mounted the amazon antenna to a window using a longer coaxial cable, ran a channel scan, and in one attempt it picked up about 60 channels, including the big 4! I also got a number of local channels, 4 PBS channels and the CW. The antenna itself has a strong quality build so I hope it lasts longer than the mohu.

I haven’t subscribed to cable TV in 20 years, and the Internet and broadband-fueled services like Netflix and Disney+ have provided more TV than one person could ever require. However, occasionally there are things that I wanted to watch that are only available on ‘regular’ TV, like certain sporting events, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, and things like that. So a low-priced device to satisfy those specific needs is what I wanted and needed. Cue Amazon Basics’ Indoor Flat TV antenna. I couldn’t be happier. It’s like a whole universe of free content has suddenly been returned to my life. While I won't be subscribing ti TV Guide to keep track of when Murder She Wrote is on, it does make it a lot easier to watch daily news, and network programming.

Setting up the device was as simple as plugging it in, using the supplied coaxial cable, into the back of my 4K HDTV (make sure your TV has one, as my 7.1 surround sound bar has plenty of HDMI inputs but no coaxial ports), having the TV do a one-time scan for available channels, and BOOM, all finished. Flipping through channels is as easy as pressing the channel button on my TV remote control. The picture quality ranges from super sharp (typically the major networks) to VHS quality (random networks that pop up in the scan). I found a few football games that were crystal clear. It’s not 4K as far as I can tell, but a stable 1080p running at high framerate during sportscasts and regular 24fps during normal TV shows.

I can’t confirm the sound quality in regards to how many channels it separated into, as I am watching it on a TV without an amplifier, but the sound quality is fine regardless. You’d need to check what audio signal your local network channels broadcasts in to be sure.

In any case, we’re well past the days of rabbit ear antennas and trying to get the least snowy picture. I can’t believe this device is only $19.99. One of the best values on Amazon.

This really exceeded my expectations. I may be fortunate where I live (Albuquerque, NM, USA) and most TV stations have towers which transmit down to the city from the mountain tops only 5 miles away. With no real antenna, my Samsung TV could receive a few basic broadcast stations, but with variable reception quality and often depending on the time of day.

When I connected the Amazon Basics flat antenna (easy with the supplied coax cable) and auto-tuned my TV, I was amazed that I was suddenly receiving more than 65 stations - CLEARLY. I had no idea there were so many out there! Naturally, half of those were either Spanish language, Religious or Shopping networks. After I quickly weeded the channels down, re-tuning my Favorites list, I now receive nearly 30 preferred TV channels. These includes all the major network affiliates (which will bring me local news and weather) and the rest are several PBS stations, older syndicated TV series, and old movies. I have subscribed to Comcast for 20 years. But, out of literally hundreds of bundled channels, I really only regularly watch a couple dozen of them - at most... and those are typically just playing in the background while I'm up at night working on my PC. I already have Netflix and Amazon Prime streaming, and now with more extensive broadcast TV options, I'm all the more more tempted to drop Cable TV entirely.

For my needs and in my particular location, I can't imagine a better antenna than the Amazon Basics non-amplified model with its modest (35-mile) range rating. With the nearby repeater transmission towers, I'm actually drawing broadcasts from all around this region - even stations technically based many more miles away than I had expected I could receive.

It's an antenna and it will pickup you local stations and give you a great picture if they are in range. If I locate the antenna behind my TV and out of site, I get 4 channels, if I place the antenna in my window, then I get 14 channels. I got the antenna so that I would not have white noise and fuzz if I accidentally hit the antenna button on my remote, and so I would have local channels when the cable is not working correctly a few times a year. For my purposes this antenna is great, I keep it out of the way until I need it and the price was right. I'd say most people should get an antenna for their TV if they have local stations, more options, and it works when your streaming/cable is down.

I live in one of the largest cities in the United States and when this is installed in the back of my TV I only have weak signal for ~20 stations. If I move the location to the wall or window it jumps to what you would expect in my area - closer to 40. But getting to my point, what's the point in buying a Slimline antenna if you're going to have to put it on the wall or window ruining the aesthetic of your space. I returned the antenna and ordered an exterior antenna that I will replace an old satellite dish with.

This is going to be a weird review.. because this product probably meets the advertised specs.. however, it is not the best product on the market and most cost effective solution like alot of reviews state.. I feel like this product is somehow over-marketed or too many bloggers are paid to push this product but it simply doesn't work well with my home setup.. it could be my setup but my esperience has been underwhelming.. if my house pointed in another direction and the window where I place this device faced a different direction then perhaps it could be the best thing ever.. but one thing is for certain, it's not a silver bullet, at least not in my case.. it's useless to me (or perhaps my setup) .. just ealize than it's not a guarantee solution for everyone.. forget about the dozens or hundreds of miles that it can pick up - if it's not pointing the the right direction out the right window then you're out of luck.. and to those critics, no I don't want to run 100ft of co-ax to stick this thing out a window on the other side of my house.. my point being is that it's not a cure-all for everyone...

4.0 out of 5 stars Buena opción de antena para señal digital.
Reviewed in Mexico on November 19, 2019
