I have a smart tv and a smart blu-ray but adding apps to those after a certain point doesn't work, which is really annoying. That's where this little gadget helps. I can easily watch whatever I want on my laptop and plug it into my tv!
I traced the problem to the part of this adaptor that connects to the laptop; it had become loose for some reason, meaning that it would not sit all the way in my laptop on its own - I had to hold the adapter into the laptop to get a snug connection, so that the monitor would display my laptop's screen. I bought another one of the same adapters, thinking maybe the adapter had just gotten old, but unfortunately, the new adapter had the same problem right away.
I ended up buying the Amazon Basics mini DisplayPort to HDMI cable (skipping the adapter all together), and it is working ok now. I just got the cable, though, so I have no idea how long it will last.
For just $10, I'm not really surprised that this adapter only lasted me about one year. But what was disappointing was that the new adapter had the same problem out-of-the-box.
(I'm giving the adapter a 3-star review, instead of 2-star, only because the first one lasted a year.)
Geek that I am, I immediately thought "giant monitor!", and with the added bonus of being able to watch Netflix, etc., on that monitor (because, Roku).
At the time I was using my newest laptop, a Macbook Pro, which has an HDMI port, as my primary computer, and so I just plugged my Vizio into the HDMI port of the MBP.
But for reasons which I won't go into right now, I decided that I wanted to go back to my old Macbook Air as my primary computer. Once I had it all set up, right by my Vizio monitor/tv, I realized "Uh oh, the Macbook Air doesn't have an HDMI port!"
{Talk about yer first-world problems, eh?)
So I jumped on Amazon, and searched for a Thunderbolt -> HDMI connector, and found this one.
(By the way, am I the only one who can never hear the term 'Thunderbolt' without thinking of that 70s movie, Thunderbolt and Lightfoot ?)
Anyways, this Thunderbolt (no Lightfoot) to HDMI cable works *perfectly*! Straight out of the box, I plugged the Thunderbolt end into my Macbook Air, and the Vizio's HDMI cable into the HDMI end, and..voila! A perfect, and gigantic, second screen for my Macbook Air!
[Note: For those of you trying this at home, remember that there are two different ways that your Mac can handle a second screen - it can either be a *true* second screen, to which you can move program/app windows from your primary screen, *or* it can be a "mirror", meaning that it will simply display whatever is on your primary screen. You can play with these (and a few other display) settings under Preferences -> Display.]
Only had it set up a day, but using it for YouTube and such is great on my office tv. The cable is a bit stiff, which in the long run will likely help with strain on the cable, but make sure your HDMI is long enough. Also, make sure to output the sound in system preferences to your tv, as by default on mine it did not output. My Mac is ruining Sierra 10.12.6 as well for those who were needing that information on software compatibility. (I haven’t jumped to high Sierra yet but foresee no issues on it with this).
I have to mention that this adapter plugs into a Thunderbolt, a mini-USB connection, not a Displayport which many Windows laptops use. So be sure to ask for what you need.
Also, I don’t think it goes the other way, if, for some reason, you wanted what you were streaming on your TV screen to be on your laptop.

Didn't want to give a 1-star review as maybe I should have investigated before purchasing, but anyone looking to do the same should avoid it as it isn't as simple as perhaps it should be.
Of course, if you use a wireless device such as chrome cast or Amazon fire stick, you have the luxury of not tying your computer to your TV, but I chose this wired option because it’s just a lot simpler.
You will need to go into your settings to work out how to mirror your MacBook screen to an external screen, but that is quite easy, and you can look that up on the Internet.
I use this adapter to hook up my MacBook Air late 2015 to my external monitor for a widescreen view, this adapter works perfectly - been using for couple of months now and have run into no issues.
I may buy a few more for travel purposes.
