Under the dome is a waterproof case for the GoPro. The floaty handle gets attached using the included wrench.
The dome allows you to capture the split image, something otherwise not possible. assembled dome, attaching the handle and I tested this out and had success taking photos. My plan was to take this on my tropical scuba vacation and get some good video/photos.
The dome isn't huge, but 7" x 5" and you have to make sure that you keep the dome scratch free. I wrapped it in a shirt in my suitcase.
Everything went well untl my GoPro stopped working, so I didn't get any photos or video. That's not the fault of the AB Underwarter Dome, as it worked perfectly when I tested it. Murphy's Law hit when I was far, far from anyplace that could fix my GoPro, but I'll try again in a few months.
The attached photo will show you the style of photos or video that the done allows you to capture.
This is a fun accessory for those that love the water and have a GoPro.
That being said, I really like this device/waterproof mount. The gopro is already waterproof ( hero 5) but what this does is allow for a very unique look under water, while maintaining above water view. you pretty much get the best of both worlds. I didn't get to try this in the ocean, however my relatives swimming pool worked just as well. The lanyard made me feel comfortable that I would not lose it, and the handle is large enough to get a great grip, without it being too large. The front cover is outstandingly clear, however I feel like through normal wear and tear it will eventually get scratched, buffed, or hazed in a way that may degrade the quality of footage you record. I would recommend cleaning after use with a microfiber and a safe cleanser of some sort, either just soap and water or a vinegar based mixture. Avoid the abrasives if you can.
I will keep this in or near my travel bag in the event my travels take me somewhere where I can use it. It offers a fun different style of view that can
have a very beautiful outcome.
Amazon says this dome can be used at depths up to 16.4 feet, whereas some makers of competitive products suggest using them at depths no greater than 2 feet. I can’t test it any more than 8 feet.
So far, I am still at the point of testing the water tightness of the housing before I entrust my GoPro to the housing.
The dome itself is made from very clear plastic. The dome measures about 7 inches across and projects out about 4 inches. Included in the box is a floating handle, a lanyard, a standard GoPro mounting screw, a carabineer clip and O-ring that attaches to the handle. A wrench is also included for the small bolts securing the dome to its base.
A waterproof case is built into the dome. I put my GoPro Hero5 into the opening for the camera and learned very quickly that the tolerances are very tight. It took me several tries to get the camera lined up precisely. Once I did, it slipped in nicely,
The clip to close the waterproof housing seems to close firmly. But the clip is difficult to open: the opening edge of the latch is very, very close to back surface of the dome. I had to use a small screwdriver to gently prise it open.
Overall, construction quality seems to be high. The instruction manual is very clear about the wisdom of testing the dome before inserting a camera. You betcha! I’m not sticking my GoPro in this until I’ve tested it thoroughly for leakage. The instruction manual suggests keeping it underwater for 5 minutes and then checking for droplets or fogging inside. Call me super-cautious, but I’m leaving to soak for several hours.
There is no room in the attached case for the LCD BacPac or extended Battery. Nor can you see the GoPro front status panel.
There are buttons for the shutter release and WiFi, though the latter may be of little use underwater.
My initial impression is that this a quality product. (It’s covered by the AmazonBasics 1-year Limited Warranty.) When I’ve been able to thoroughly test its water tightness, I’ll insert a camera and take it into the pool. Sorry for the cautious approach, but GoPro cameras are expensive and I don’t want to risk one until I know the dome is a safe environment.
