This is one of the items you wonder what the heck were they thinking. It's a multimeter it does exactly what you think it should. While it doesn't have a light up screen, it's also under 15 bucks. What it does have is a battery compartment that is screwed in with the smallest possible screws so when you need to install or remove the battery you need to hunt down in eyeglass repair kit. This is a multimeter you don't need anything more than a simple hook connection you're not going to drop it repeatedly and if you do you could buy another one as it's only $15. The only positive thing about the battery compartment is it runs on a 9-volt battery so you won't be opening the compartment very frequently. It's definitely four stars but if you are older or don't have small screwdrivers perhaps look at other options.

I have 35 years experience using multimeters as an electronics technician, calibration technician, aerospace instrumentation tech, and as a common backyard mechanic repairing stuff at home. In know when a $400 Fluke 87 is needed and when a less expensive DMM is appropriate. This is an amazing value for a DMM under $20. Having a 10 amp range is a very BIG plus on a meter of this very low price. The battery check that actually current loads the tested battery is a great feature. This is a very good balance of capability and very low price for general household projects. It is so inexpensive that I bought one just to always have in our camper trailer, and so small that it doesnt use up much tool box space.

The multimeter worked as expected. Haven't been able to compare accuracy to my much more expensive Fluke meter, but for the typical handyman/DIY checks around the house, this device exceeds what's required. I particularly like the compact size (about the size of a cellphone) without sacrificing the screen size. I can throw this in my toolbox without taking up much room. There is no trouble with readings values even at a distance, especially when the back light is illuminated. Only negative I would mention is the probe contacts being on the small side making good contact with whatever is being tested slightly difficult (also, alligator clips are not included). Would highly recommend product for anything not requiring laboratory accuracy.

This meter is a Southwire 10037k with different color plastics and printing. I am guessing Amazon contracted with the existing factory when Southwire made their annual model change for the sake of change. The original Southwire is one of the best value meters I've used. The replacement model is inferior, with features removed for no benefit. That's meter is also less than the original. I'm guessing Amazon spec'd a cheaper plastic for the screen. The also made a horrible choice for the case color/printing color, as there is very little contrast between them. Since I frequently use my meter in poorly lit circumstances, this is a problem. Meter works great, but it could have been so much better.
UPDATE:
Display stopped showing any thing after only being used a handful of times. Backlight still comes on, however.
