When Angel's instincts tell her there's more to the mystery surrounding the severe injury to a local elderly woman, whose beautiful garden is one of the stops on her photography assignment, she meets Jason the detective assigned to the case. When his steel gray eyes meet her blinking blues, none of them, including David, can deny the flying sparks.
When Angel and David's hotel room is broken into, they begin to suspect her hunch about the woman's "accidental fall" was right. Maybe there's something much more sinister going on and whoever is behind it, knows that Angel is onto them.
I enjoyed the different perspectives although my favorites were Angel's and the Psychopath's. i don't want to give too much away but the suspense was awesome (kept me up reading until my eyes watered) it was a quick page turner and although the scenes were well set, I didn't feel bogged down in descriptions that I could conjure in my own imagination.
There's some steamy romance as well but notice I wrote romance not play by play sex. The connections were genuine and the attraction was sincere on both sides which made it believable. I think Jason is a keeper Angel! ;)
Ambient Light is well-written, fast paced, mystery with a great storyline. The author ambitiously tackles the challenge of changing perspective across a number of chapters in the book, giving us overlapping views of critical scenes from the perspectives of different characters. Perhaps the only blemish on this entertaining mystery for me, is that some of the key scenes seemed to end too soon. They left me wishing that the author had drawn out those scenes more, thus ramping up the tension and creating even more drama and intrigue for her readers. However, apart from that, Ambient Light was an entertaining ride, and I look forward to more of Lorraine Adair's Angel McKenzie Mysteries in the future.
Lorraine also has an ear for dialogue that is sadly missing in many books these days. With several authors I've read recently, you can tell they struggle with the dialogue, but not Lorraine. Each character has their own unique voice, and you can really tell who is talking without having to be constantly reminded in the text.
All in all, an excellent read, and I cannot wait for the next book!
