The BC-2000 Intelligent Battery Charger

Simple, Sophisticated, Smart, and Safe

The second generation BC-2000 intelligent battery charger is sophisticated, simple to use, smart, and safe. Extend the life and revive rechargeable batteries.

The charger features four independent channels that can be programmed as group or individually, and six independent temperature sensors to protect against overheating.

The BC-2000 can also revive spent rechargeable batteries, or recondition batteries that have not been used for a long period of time, restoring them to their rated original capacity. In addition, batteries can be tested for present capacity and end of life.

The BC-2000 includes six independent sensors for comprehensive overheating protection. There are four independent over-temperature battery sensors and two independent over-temperature control board sensors.

Short circuit protection is designed on the main board. The charger will not be damaged, even when the battery is completely short circuited.

The rugged construction offers extensive ventilation for the batteries and charging circuits.

Basic Features

The BC-2000 charges and discharges NiCd or NiMH rechargeable batteries. The BC-2000 provides four independent charging slots for AA/AAA rechargeable batteries. In addition, the charger can also optimize and test the maximum capacity of each rechargeable battery.

The charger can also charge batteries of different sizes (AAA and AA), types (NiCd or NiMH) and capacities at the same time.

The charger integrates the voltage change over time, referred to as the 'minus delta voltage', and automatically terminates charging.

When the battery is fully charged, the charger will automatically continue to provide a trickle charge. Trickle charging prevents the rechargeable batteries from being overcharged, and compensates for self-discharging of the batteries.

The charger also includes over-temperature protection, and will shut off the current flow to protect the rechargeable batteries and charger itself from overheating.

The charger features an easy to read backlight display.

This package includes a UL rated AC adapter.

Comprehensive Operational Modes

Charge Mode

The rechargeable battery is charged up to its maximum capacity. The charging rate (current) can be independently adjusted for each battery.

Discharge Mode

The discharge mode reduces the 'memory effect'. The rechargeable battery is discharged to a preset battery voltage (0.9V). Once the discharge is finished, the battery can be recharged at the pre-selected charging current. Discharge current is always half of the selected charge current.

Refresh Mode

A rechargeable battery is charged and discharged repeatedly to optimize to its maximum capacity. Old rechargeable batteries or rechargeable batteries that have not been used for a long period of time can be restored to their rated capacity. Depending on the selected charging current, it can take days before completed. The refresh mode will complete three discharge and charge cycles before completed.

Test and Quick Test Mode

The test mode checks the present capacity of the rechargeable battery. The maximum capacity is determined by discharging the rechargeable battery after fully charged. If the maximum capacity is much lower than the rated capacity then it may be near its end of life.

The quick test mode will analyze the dynamic internal battery resistance by applying a load current, and measuring the current.

Battery charger on steroids and street smarts

Battery charger on steroids and street smarts
Like the title says, this thing is a battery charger on steroids. This thing will charge (duh), discharge, recondition, test, slice, dice...wait forget those last two. Back on topic, this is so much more than just a battery charger. I've only been able to "play" with it a little bit but I think it's really cool. First off I've never seen a battery charger with a real display like this thing has. It sure blows the typical green light for charged and red light for charging that most other chargers have out of the water. It shows you so much information about the batteries it makes my inner geek jump with joy.To test it out I took some old AAA rechargables I had laying around and put this thing through the wringer. Since the batteries had been laying around for a good while, I just let it charge them. About 5 or so minutes later, two of the batteries said FULL while the others kept charging which took about another 20 minutes on the default amperage. Since it appears that I had two bad batteries, I decided to see what else this wonderful gizmo could do. I decided to run a quick test on it. The quick test just checks the internal resistance of the battery. In other words, low resistance good, high resistance bad. After the quick test, I had readings on the awesome display, of about 120 milliohms for the good batteries and around 150 for the bad ones. The manual states that a good battery should be around 20 - 80 milliohms but anything over 500 is a sign that the battery is kaput.Since I was in a testing mood, and because it seems like I had two good batteries and two possibly quasi crappy batteries, I decided to do the full test. This test charges the battery and then discharges is. After the discharge is complete, the display shows you how much juice it sucked out of the batteries. You can then compare this to what the battery is actually rated for. Two of my batteries had a really low mAh rating while the other two were a bit higher. This leads me to believe that two of these batteries are still almost dead. While I haven't done a refresh yet, it's next on the list. I haven't done it yet simply because it can take a long time since it involves multiple charge/discharge cycles. I'm sure though that since these batteries are old, the refresh mode should be able to knock some sense into them and give them a little extra life. I'll try and update the review after I've done that but don't hold your breath. Sorry, just being honest cause it may or may not actually get done. The display is very easy to read and has a back light that comes on at first and then returns later one whenever you push a button. Speaking of buttons, the buttons are nice and big. Not monster huge but they are big enough for a normal human to be able to push them. You can view different...uhm...stats on different batteries too. By pushing the SLOT button, you can cycle through the different well, slots. This makes them blink after which you can push DISPLAY and cycle through the battery voltage, mAh, time since charge/etc started, and the charge/discharge current. While this isn't something that most normal people would do, it can still be done!Basically to make a long story short...or I guess that would be a long review short, this battery charger is the cat's meow. The only gripes I could make myself come up with, are that it doesn't nativly fit C or D batteries. There is however an adapter to make them fit but I honestly don't care because I don't have any rechargeable C or D batteries. Also since this thing is the Albert Einstein, or should it be the Nikola Tesla? Either way, since this thing is the Albert Tesla of battery chargers, it would be nice it played some fancy whimsical melody when it was done doing your battery maintenance deeds.Product was received for no charge in exchange for a review.

Many good reviews about this charger. Works as described. You can charge/cycle just 1 battery (or any) up to 4 batteries. Each battery can be monitored and also charged differently. It offers more stats than a DVM voltmeter. After a few normal use cycles, most sets of 4 new batteries have one go slack and give you only 75% capacity. This charger tells you. You also get to see (Quick Test) resistance, tells if the battery is still good. A battery checker will not reveal life left, nor current capacity, this is a Smart Charger. For a very reasonable price, it gives you total battery diagnostics. The backlight also goes Off after a short time, but you can still see the LCD display readouts.

I have many dumb timer battery chargers, but you really do need this one with a digital readout to thoroughly check out your batteries, otherwise you're just guessing. It pays for itself. It peak charges each battery so you will get the Absolute Most Life out of your AA/AAA rechargeables.

I haven't used rechargeable batteries in years, but decided to go with rechargeables when some devices needed new batteries. I did quite a bit of searching before deciding on this, and decided on the Ambient Weather model instead of the identical OPUS model since this one mentions warranty. NLee the Engineer's review provided a lot of helpful info in making an informed decision about this charger (http://www.amazon.com/review/RXYXZ4YZFNM5U/ref=cm_cr_dp_title?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B00LUZHL4C&channel=detail-glance&nodeID=1055398&store=home-garden). So far it has worked beautifully with some Eneloops that I also picked up from Amazon.

Key features I find really important that separate this from other chargers are having battery information for all four batteries readily available at a quick glance. I didn't want to deal with displays cycling through all four batteries since it becomes confusing and you can easily miss a reading. The way this display is setup takes some getting used to but is quite intuitive. Once you pick it up, you can easily navigate the menus without having to go back to the manual.

It was a nice product when it was working. After 22 months of light use the charger no longer works. When I plug it in all icons on the display light up at the same time and the buttons are non responsive. I'm very disappointed because I have only used the charger about a dozen times.

Update: Changing from 1 star to 3 because of the companies customer service. I received a replacement unit within 2 days of them receiving my defective unit. Hopefully this one is more reliable than the first.

This charger is way more than a charger. It can bring old rechargeable batteries back to life and even tell you if they are too far gone to recondition. However there is one BIG WARNING that is not in the manual. When inserting the smaller batteries (AAA in the AA/AAA slots and C in the C/D adapter) you MUST insert the negative end down into the bottom of it's end of the slot before pushing the positive end down! This is because in the AAA and C slots the contact tabs have no ramp to line up the battery, just a small tab that barely contacts the outer edge of the battery. If you just push the battery into the slot, the outer cylinder of the battery will bend these small metal tabs down to where they will no longer make electrical contact with the negative end of the battery and you will always get a "null" (bad battery) display on perfectly good batteries after that. You have to gently set the negative end in the slot and then slide it to the end then snap the positive end down in place because the positive end ONLY has a ramp to align the battery.

If you do bent these little tabs you can carefully bend them back into place maybe one time before they break. This is either a flaw in the documentation or a design flow, but a flaw never the less that it is not mentioned in the manual.

Defective. Maybe mine was a dud, but this product failed miserably. Charged 1 set of 4 AAA batteries fine. Next i went to charge AA batteries and the 4 little LCD's just blink on and off and no user input detected. Sending back now.

The product works as advertised, but I can't say it's an amazing product. First, the controls aren't intuitive. Because the same set of four buttons control each bay, you need to toggle to a certain bay before you can change the settings. It would have been better to have separate buttons for each bay and shrink the excessively large LCD screen. There's also a discharge/refresh function that took me some time to figure out (is it discharging or refreshing?) I guess it's discharging to refresh, but it also charges when it's doing that, so why not make it a charge/discharge/refresh option to make it easy to understand?

I can't expect too much accuracy from a $30 product, but it gave me a null reading on one of my batteries. I was going to throw the battery away but saw some other reviewer comments and charged the battery in a quick charger first. When I put it back in this charger, it correctly charged, because the initial voltage was too low. It's not a good sign when you need another charger to get this charger to work. For the quick test, it gave me a very high resistance reading for one of my batteries but when I tried it in another bay, I got a much lower reading.
