It's easy to read from a distance; it properly puts temperature first, then humidity; includes a barometer-- and a graph of pressure for the past 24 hours, so you can see if weather is getting fairer or not; and has a Moon phase display which is great for those who enjoy stargazing.
You can also cycle the 24-hour graph through for indoor-outdoor temperature and humidity, too,
We got this one because it has humidity "calibration"-- you can alter the display +- a certain amount. However, we've found both temp and humidity quite accurate. That was gauged by comparing it to a set of regular thermometers and other gauges-- and to itself! You put the sensor next to the device indoors and see if the indoor-outdoor readings match.
The backlit colors are great, too; giving one a feel for the outside temperature by color code.
One big plus-- this operates off both electricity and battery. Best to leave it plugged in. The cord is long enough to put it on a table.
A PRO AND A CON
Now, the display is BRIGHT! That's great for seeing and reading it but, at night, the light is almost blindingly bright-- so much so that you'll think someone has left a light on in the room it's in! OK, no problem, as the top button can be pressed to turn off the light, then in the morning, you can turn it on again.
However, pressing that top button takes a fair amount of pressure and you have to hold it down for a couple of seconds to turn the display on more than momentarily. This worked fine for us-- until this morning, when the kickstand broke off and the device slid off the table and crashed to the floor! Turns out that the kickstand is attached to the back only with two tiny plastic pieces that are easily broken off!
It's a real shame as it means the unit can no longer be propped up on its own for viewing! (We had a spare, inexpensive plastic mini-easel that works, though it looks poor aesthetically.)
The moral of this story is to use 2 hands to turn on the backlight-- one, to hold the unit and the other to press the top button. Otherwise, the pressure is transmitted directly to the kickstand and it will eventually break off, as it did to us.
In any event, other than that, it is a good product and now occupies the central place in our corral of indoor-outdoor devices!
I was really liking this unit in the couple of hours I had exposure to it. The unit is so feature packed. However, the build quality is questionable at this point. Amazon does not (at this time) offer an exchange on this item, so you will have to wait for a refund, and re-purchase the unit if you want a replacement. Otherwise you'll have to pay twice, and wait for a refund from Amazon in order to avoid a lengthy exchange delay.
I'm going to cross my fingers and give this one more try. The second unit will be more reliable. If the new unit holds up, I'll bite the bullet and buy additional sensors.
Update: June 21, 2015
I left the first comment the day that this item arrived, and Ed, an employee of Ambient Weather reached out to me to replace my defective unit. The next day, after verifying confirming that the unit was actually dead and submitting my invoice, Ed had his warranty department send a new unit to me. Luckily, I happen to be in the same state they are located in, and the new unit arrived the very next day! The replacement was very smooth, and Ambient Weather's customer service is very friendly and efficient. I was really impressed!
Now that I have a working unit, and all of the programming is completed and thermometer and hygrometers are calibrated... This is a really fine unit! I am running 3 remote sensors, which monitor the outside temp/humidity, and two that monitor my precious cigar humidor. Anyone who knows how important it is to keep a stable climate for cigars will appreciate this unit! The thermometer is very accurate, and the hygrometer seems to be off around 3-4% from the factory, but after calibrating them to 2 other hygrometers I already had, it now reads within 1% of my digital thermometers/hygrometers that I previously used to monitor the climate in my humidor. In addition, I love the alarm feature, as I can set the console to alert me if the temperature or humidity in my humidor become too high or fall to low, and that it needs attention. The other very useful feature is the history graph. You have a few option to select from when it comes to what data the console shows you in the history graph, however I like to monitor my humidity. It allows you to display the console's thermometer / hygrometer readings, a specified remote sensor, or it will cycle between all of the remote sensors, displaying the data on the 12 or 24 hour history graph. This unit gives me the ability to see what happened in my humidor while I was away, and if there were any peaks or valleys with respect to the relative humidity; one of the most important parts of aging cigars.
There's no doubt in my ind that you can't get a better unit for the money. My constructive criticism would the following: While I very much appreciate having a product that allows me to own a feature rich product like the WS-110 at a very affordable price, I think I would pay another $20-30 for something a little more slim, fashion-forward, and updated in terms of the low-res display and cheap feeling buttons. A color LCD and some up/down toggle buttons that feel like they'll last for a while would be nice. Lastly, I didn't find the setup to be too terribly challenging. It was mostly annoying because I couldn't press and hold a button to increase a value that needed an extreme change. Especially when it came to calibrating the relative pressure, which was off by about 3F, but measured in 10ths. So to go from 28.00 to 31.97 took, what... 397 clicks? It would have been nice to push and hold the + button and get 5-10 point increase where as not to wear out my fingers. My only other thought would be to keep this fabulous unit exactly how it is, and offer a higher dollar product for people willing to spend $100+ on a slim, sexy, high definition color (maybe even touch screen) display. At least then you wouldn't have to worry about those buttons!
I highly recommend this unit. It's packed with features and pretty fun to keep an eye on. If you're thinking about purchasing, give it a try! It's a good product, cheaply built, but Ambient Weather really stands behind their products, and offer great support should you run into any issues. If you're gentle with the unit, I don't see why it wouldn't last for years to come.
